With temperatures expected to rise into the mid-to-high 90s today in Pleasanton and the Tri-Valley, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued a Spare the Air alert for Monday.

Air district officials are encouraging Bay Area residents to try

to drive less, take public transportation and limit home energy use to reduce pollution levels.

The region is expected to see high temperatures for much of the coming week, according to the National Weather Service. Winds today are predicted to be between 5 and 10 mph.

Despite the alert, the Air Quality District officials said there will be no free public transportation today.

This is the fifth Spare the Air alert for smog in 2011.

  1. If we could get people to do this everyday, would we need spare-the-air days?

If so, it would be wonderful because this situation evokes the image of pigs wallowing in their own filth.

  2. Zelda,

Good point! Maybe this can be seen as an evolutionary Rappaccini-azation of the population. In a generation or two, we’ll thrive on pollutants.
