The recently activated metering lights on the Bernal and Sunol southbound onramps to 680 are having the opposite of the intended purpose of relieving traffic congestion. Every morning for the past few weeks, cars queuing up for their turn to join the crawl down 680 to Sunol, are backing up the ramps spilling onto Bernal and Sunol impeding traffic and causing potential unsafe situations.
The metering lights were intended to mitigate traffic congestion, but are now contributing to the problem. When will CalTrans and our Supervisor Scott Haggerty wake up and realize, both the Luxury Toll Lane and metering lights are abject failures. Worker productivity and quality of life for those struggling through the morning commute have dramatically decreased since the opening of the toll lane and now the metering lights are adding to the misery.
I urge all of you who commute to the South Bay to write or call Supe Haggerty and express your feelings on these traffic "improvements".
