Two mayors and a congressman bagged groceries for more than an hour yesterday at Safeway’s Pleasanton supermarket to help the Safeway Foundation raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), an organization that helps more than one million Americans affected by neuromuscular diseases.

Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Pleasanton), Mayor Jennifer Hosterman and former Mayor Tom Pico bagged customers’ groceries at breakneck speeds although Safeway representatives chose no winner, saying all three bagged at acceptable speeds. At times, the bagging process slowed as customers took the time to discuss local and national issues and to thank the three for their participation in the MDA fundraising efforts.

In another checkout aisle, MDA “client” and Pleasanton resident David Fletcher, 6, and his father Vince were on hand to greet customers and to share their experiences.

Susan Houghton, director of public affairs for Safeway Corporation, which is headquartered n Pleasanton, who was also at the Santa Rita Road store for the Labor Day event, said the Safeway Foundation raises funds for MDA through generous donations by employees and customers. The current MDA campaign ended last night. More than $47 million has been raised for MDA by Safeway over the last decade.

Joining in the “Celebrity Bagger” event were sophomore girls who are on the cheerleading squad at Amador Valley High School. They sang, chanted and performed a number of cheerleading acts during the late morning event, bringing loud applause from hundreds of customers and store employees.

Members of the cheerleading squad at the store were Emily St. Pierre, Alex Rooney, Claire Goveia, Eileen Drury, Katy Gibbons, Sarah Loduha and Emily Martin.

  1. how long are we going to allow Jerry McNUMMI to steal work from the hard working union folks at Safeway?

he already abolished the UAW jobs in California — are grocery stores the next target?

  2. I agree MCNERNEY believes IN HEALTH CARE, NO JOBS, STIMULUS, AND REPRESENTING NANCY PELOSI AND THE DEMOCRATES NOT THE TAX PAYERS OF OUR DISTRICT. ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE, SEND MCNERNEY BACK TO WHERE HE CAME FROM AN IDLE DEMOCRAT WITH LOTS OF MONEY.

  3. @ Susan – Why are you yelling? Jerry McNerney has well represented me and many of your neighbors during his term. You seem to have a very short memory if you think Congressman McNerney is a sell-out or are you just conveniently forgetting how Richard Pombo took tax-payer funded “fact-finding” trips to National Parks with his family.

  4. More like its about our kids inheriting 13 trillion dollars in debt racked up by Pelosi and McNerney while failing to stimulate real job growth. Oh yeah I forgot… they did re-pave Stoneridge.

Our children and their parents need a strong, vibrant economy that is not mortgaged to the hilt. McNerney should keep working on his bagging skills, as he may need them when he’s out of a job in November.

  5. CURIOUS, PAMBO ISN’T RUNNING. mCNERNEY VOTED FOR THE HEALTH CARE BILL, AND TOLD HIS DISTRICT TAX PAYERS HE WAS VOTING FOR OBAMA, PELOSI AND HARRY REID, NOT HIS DISTRICT TAX PAYERS. THEREFORE, SAYING I REPRESENT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, NOT MY DISTRICT.

  6. Been to any McNerney Town Hall meetings lately? Oh, that’s right, he doesn’t handle face-to-face contact with his constituents very well. He uses that convenient dodge of a telephone Town Hall. Received any calls? I’m guessing that his only conference-Town Hall calls are arranged with Vets on Hogs. He only pays attention to two groups—Vets and the Democrat machine of Obama, Reid, and Pelosi. The second group is enough to make a skunk vomit.

Please consider Harmer. He will not be any worse.

  7. Kudos to McNerney, Hosterman & Pico for setting aside POLITICS to help disabled children. Being a mom of a child with MD, I thank you for taking the time to help raise funds for and awareness of this horrible disease. I also thank Safeway for their month long donation drive.

  8. Be interesting to know if they did the same thing last year? It would point to this a being a political stage show during an election year or a nice gesture.

  9. Greetings lifelong friends in the…somethingth District! I, your GOP candidate, don’t want to be left out of such community involvement, so I invite you to watch me bag my own groceries at Draegers in Blackhawk this Sunday (that’s somewhere near your little town, right?)

You won’t believe what I can afford with all my out-of-state funding! And the best part will be that any proceeds will go to…ME! Anything less would be socialism!

  10. Any chance McNerney might have like bagging groceries enough to make it a full-time gig? It’s great that the guy supports local charity events but I wish he worked harder and better at bringing jobs to his district.

  11. Mr. McNerney has done more for this district than you can imagine. All the Republicans want to do is tear down anything that stops them from getting elected. They, not the Democrats, are tearing down this great country. Open you eyes and stop your hatred.
