Kids Who Are Being Hurt Around Town, posted by Karen, a resident of the Another Pleasanton neighborhood neighborhood, on Sep 8, 2012 at 12:36 pm
I just saw somethng in Safeway today that made me think...it made me think of children living with abusive parents. I feel so sad for those kids, they feel so alone. They blame themselves, they think they're bad...they're scared.
They often don't even realize they're being abused.
The idea of telling a teacher or another adult is scary too, because the child has to live with the consequences of telling.
The consequences can be more abuse.
Abused children go to school and are either quiet and get no attention, or act out and get a lot of negative attention.

If you know of a child who is being abused, register a complaint with her/his school. File a police report. Contact Child Protective Services in your area. Befriend the student. Find a way to direct him/her to a counselor in your area so that she/he can learn ways to manage the stressors. Please consider never allowing anybody to harm a child. The USA needs healthy children who can cope effectively when they become adults. If they do not receive the support that they need, it is likely they will become adults who abuse children.

Great post, Karen. I have to tell you as a school employee, there is little we can do besides call Social Services. Every time I've been involved in a call, I've been told there's nothing they can do because there aren't any physical marks. Even if the child feels afraid, the parents have more rights.
It's so incredibly sad. I rarely am involved in a call but when I am, I wish I could take these kids home and raise them myself.

As a libertarian, I believe that the parent is responsible for raising his or her kids. I don't want to pay taxes for somebody else's kid, and I certainly don't want to pay taxes so that the state can intervene like Big Brother. I mean, because of state regulations, parents can't even spank their kids in public any more. We're all looking over our shoulder while Big Brother sets up surveillance cameras everywhere. Its getting more and more like Russia.
Face it, eventually these kids will have to grow up and take responsibility for their own lives. The parents will be a thing of the past.
