"A drug detection dog alerted to a car; no drugs were found, according to a police report, which said a search of the car turned up a knife."
They arrested a teen for having a knife in a presumably locked car in the school parking lot? Unless the knife was a switchblade, which is illegal in itself, I can't help but feel that the police and school administration are overreacting a bit. I have a basic utility swiss knife in my own car as well as some other tools in case of a road emergency. There's nothing sinister about that.

So Katchup finds it intrusive and Sam finds it overreacting? Wait until it's your kid who gets threatened by some liberal loon's kid waltsing around putting a blade under any kid's chin whose wearing a Romney button or an American flag on his lapelle. We are going downhill so fast because liberal socialist parents, not enstilling proper morale values, want the nanny state to do everything for us. Searching cars is unadequate. We need strip searches and we need them now. Our nation's future depends on it.

I can admit this now that my daughter graduated a few years ago, but you better believe she had pepper spray on her disguised as a pen at all times while at one of the two Pleasanton high schools. She was robbed once by a student from another school in town after school one day about 100 yards off campus and had other electronics stolen while at school. Sorry, but we do have our own brand of thugs in town and had they ever gone after her and not just stuff, I had her armed with pepper spray for protection and I don't care who doesn't like it.

Steve.well said. How quickly people forget about Columbine and the horror those two losers inflicted on the nation. As a tax Ayer how's money pays for the little kiddies school, I am glad PPD has stepped up in a proactive way to stop the threat before it happens......and before anyone says it.. The little kiddie do not have a right to privacy at a public school.

The dog alerted to marijuana flakes in the car, not enough to arrest but the knife was found. So the dog did his job correctly. In the search the knife was found. No knives are allowed on a school campus escept for small pocket size. School safety first, your little darlin's rights second.

The "knife" this kid was arrested for was probably not a weapon, it was very likely a small pocket knife or multi-tool. Leatherman multi-tools are in most glove boxes, they are a practical and innocent item and are not a threat to campus safety but they are a felony if locked in a car on a school campus.
Sam if you drive onto a school campus with that pocket knife in your glovebox you are committing a felony.

A small knife or pocket multi-tool? May I remind you of 9-1-1, sir? What small multi-tool was used to hijack American plains flying over our beautiful land of power and freedom? Point is that there are terrorists living in our midst. We cannot be too careful, especially with a terrorist loving communist as our president. I say imprison the kid and through away the key!
