Question for communters on 680 Around Town, posted by Curious, a resident of the Danbury Park neighborhood, on Apr 25, 2012 at 11:47 am
There is some type of major construction project right next the 680 southbound freeway. It is visible to the left as I am commuting on northbound 680 from Pleasanton, right before the Mission Blvd. exit in Fremont. Does anyone know what the project is? Today there was smoke or steam shooting straight up into the sky from a very large pipe. Just curious!

Its the Vargas Shaft (really).
The Vargas shaft is the entry point for tunnel boring for a new Hetch Hetchy water feed to the Bay Area. The tunnel will be almost 3 miles long extending from Alameda creek end of the Sunol grade (Alameda portal) to the Fremont side (Irvington portal).
I wish Pleasanton could tap into this feed. Hetch Hetchy water is some of the cleanest and best tasing water in the world. Unlike Pleasanton's ground water which has to rank near the bottom. We have two sets of glasses. One set goes through the dishwasher and the other set is hand dried. The hand dried glasses look brand new and are crystal clear. The dishwasher cleaned glasses looked like they have been buried in dirt for years and you cannot even see through the glass they are so coated with whatever is used in purifying? the water.

I have lived in Pleasanton for 37 yrs, and have never had any trouble with cloudy glasses. We do not have a super duper dishwasher either. I my be crazy , but I happen to like the taste of Pleasantons water. Maybe I have funny taste buds.
