Advertising Vodka to kids at school

Original post made by why?, Donlon Elementary School, on Mar 30, 2012

There has been a blimp flying around Pleasaton today and for the past couple weeks. It's not the Goodyear Blimp but a "Hanger Vodka" Blimp. Why are they flying over the school playgrounds advertising Vodka?

I've raised 4 kids and I just got my youngest to the age of 21 without any under-age citations but, I can tell you, like soooo many other parents.... it was certainly a close call. I have seen so much, learned so much...it is really hard for kids and parents to avoid the perils of under-age drinking. And Vodka is verrrrry popular for a number of reasons: it doesn't smell and, because it's clear, it can pass for water (watch those water bottles, Mom). It is the go-to drink for anyone under 21.

Having this blimp in the sky, over our town, is a VERY bad thing.

My kids would have loved it. But it's NOT a good idea.

It's just fuel for the fire.

Was in Oakland on Wedensday and saw the blimp flying over the peninsula. I don't think it is targeting Pleasanton much less our schools and kids.
Vodka ads and ads for other adult beverages are all over.... print, tv etc. The best way to preventalcohol use/abuse by our teems is to be an involved parent like 'Been There' has indicated.

the blimp goes out of the Livermore airport so that is why it is seen in Pleasanton. If you think you can hid alcohol from your kids, you are just kidding yourself. Use this as an educational opportunity to talk with your kids about drinking.

Oh this is just too good. The Hellicopter Mommies taking a stand against the Vodka Blimp.

Here is the only recourse to save your precious 8th place participation trophy winning, entitled offspring.

Do not watch ANY television/Hulu/Roku/Apple TV, etc., online or social media, use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, et. al. Also by no means listen to the radio, XM/Sirius/Pandora, or iHeart Radio. And above all NEVER look up in the sky, read a billboard, bus stop or shopping mall kiosk advertising portal. You should probably consider a pair of blinders, a chastity belt or perhaps even ship junior off to a monastery in Tierra Del Fuego until their 30th birthday (just to be safe ya know)

Or...you could try something really crazy and ACT LIKE A PARENT! Sometimes a good smack on the backside will send the message that certain behaviour is simply not tolerated in YOUR house nor in society. Throw out Dr. Spock and help to "un-entitle" your little darlings.

If, Mr. Geeneyuss, I perchance light upon you giving a "good smack on the backside" of your youngster and for that matter any else's kid, I shall call Social Services in hopes you are arrested for child abuse. Cheers, Don Frazer

Take the blimp as a REMINDER TO PARENTS about acohol use by kids. Advertising is EVERYWHERE. Parents should keep alert at home for alcohol use by their kids. I've reported (to school/police) seeing "little" plastic bottles of vodka tossed away very near the middle school bus stop on Touriga Drive (I confirmed, bus stop only used for school p/u). Don't know for sure if it's from a kid or an adult parking by the creek there.

Noticed seeing them for 2 yrs now while on walks. Still appear as of today. Don't know if school/police ever caught or looked for a student drinking there. Someone is picking them up occasionally, but more appear. Very sad to think its happening and I can't tell a parent.

I agree with "local" about the siting of the blimp by children (if they in fact notice) is an EXCELLENT opportunity for a teaching moment parent to child. Being a parent is about teaching your children how to rise above the noise of this chaotic, sometimes immoral world. Far too much attention is paid to 'little Johnny's or little Susie's' grades than paid to their eternal soul.

Smirnoff Vodka just came out with separate Marshmallow and Whipped Cream flavored vodkas. What makes you think they're catering to kids?

Friends, I wouldn't lose sleep over a blimp advertising vodka. If you've educated your children @ home about drugs and alcohol, and closely monitored them, they'll know better than fall prey to this.

If you all go online to the company's website, it clearly says on their "blimp tour" page that it is flying throughout the bay area and landing in Alameda, CA. I am sure their intention is not to in-courage kids in Pleasanton to drink, I simply believe they are trying to advertise their product due to the fact that they are a new growing company.

Of course, how could anyone think that a private sector, nonunion, capitalist company would try to encourage kids to drink alcoholic beverages? I've never heard of such a thing. These companies are persons with consciences, and they're job creating heroes to boot.

WOW how insecure you all are--a blimp advertising vodka-whoopedoo. It is not on purpose flying over schools but MUST stay in the flight area. Next all you insecure parents of Swankville are going to not let your little rugrats go to a major sporting event since they have Beer and hard liquor signs for sponsors.
Get over it and go count the benches on Stanley Blvd.
