Pleasanton School Board
Schools & Kids, posted by common sense, a resident of the Another Pleasanton neighborhood neighborhood, on Dec 23, 2011 at 7:55 pm

After watching on channel 28 the recent School Board meeting, I was amazed at the animosity shown as well as the arrogance of some of the members. Does the Pleasanton school district really need these people or can 5 others be chosen? It really doesnt appear to me that these 5 people can work together and our children will suffer for lack of leadership.

While all five of them should be free to debate the issues and vote how they see, when it comes to things like rotation of duties, they should keep the politics and clics out of it. The last meeting was disgusting on how not to be a leader. There was a process for rotation that would be fair to all. I believe the problem started with Chris Grant. He took the president position for two years in a row and that set the precedent. His excuse before was that the new members of the board were only there for a single year and were not experienced yet. Then he did a 180 degree by voting for a new member this year and bypassing the normal rotation. It is obvious now that Chris did not think about experience last time; it was just an excuse to support some friends on the board. Since Chris did this twice, it is obviously the way he works. Time to kick Chris out of the sandbox and vote him off at the next election. Maybe we can get back to the point where elected officials can agree to disagree and be professional.

I am new here but the more I read about the board, the more I am concerned.

When is the next school board election?

@new The next school board elections are Nov 2012. Valerie Arkin, Chris Grant, and Jamie Hintke are up for election. Rumor had it that Chris was not going to run again. I don't know if Jamie and Valerie have decided to run again. Unfortunately, Jamie and Valerie have been the two most educated and most willing to question the "traditional PUSD board" way of doing things. Prior to them being on the board, PUSD was a "yes man" to PUSD administration. Chris is the last of the "old guard" from that period. Both Laursen and Bower have proven that they favor the "yes man" attitude and Chris Grant's abuse of the non-binding agreements. I hope both Hintzke and Arkin run again. The community needs them, they alone are responsible for the increased open communication between PUSD board and the community.

Wow, i was bored and just watched the school board meeting where Joan Laursen was elected President. Better then tv. . .but is anyone else concerned that it looked like a Brown Act violation between Laursen, Bowser & Grant. A Board member is only supposed to talk to one other member about an agenda item. Sure looked like the 3 of them had a plan before the meeting ever stated. And BTW, I'm not a Hintske supporter but I do believe that laws governing board meetings need to be followed!!!
