Isn't it ironic, that the California Teachers Association and all of its locals are complaining about the reduction of state education funding? When it was the CTA who wrote and supported Prop 98 in 1988 which locked in guaranteed education funding? Did these well educated professionals consider that business, personal income and sales are cyclical? And that there might be a future where California's revenues suffer a decline? Now CTA is sleeping in its own bed and eating its own dog food, due to their poorly designed proposition (which, by the way, passed with only 51% of the vote) and is demanding that everyone else pony up with new taxes.
Now CTA has called a "CA State of Emergency" (Web Link) for May 9-13 and plans a series of state-wide union actions including a week-long occupation of the state capitol.
Making this "An Emergency for Thee, but not for Me". Pleasanton's own teacher's union president made a call for this week of action while at the same time inking an agreement with PUSD that increases all teachers' salaries by 2.7% for next year.
As we see with the events rolling out, CTA (Web Link and Web Link) is funding teacher release time and transportation for teachers to go to Sacramento.
So let's see how this works. Taxpayers fund school districts. School Districts pay salaries to teachers. Teachers pay mandatory dues to unions. Those unions pay a portion of dues to the CTA. And CTA is using our taxpayer money to fund a week-long occupation of our state capitol.

On one hand you claim that California taxpayers pay for all of public education in this state, then you blame CTA for requiring the state to actually pay the amounts promised to run the schools- so really wondering what is wrong with that?
You want the "credit" for paying for public ed, yet not willing to follow through with that deal I see, just say you are. In actuality- your tax money hasn't been funding Ca. schools the MINIMUM guaranteed since 1995. And this number keeps falling. Prop. 98 was just a farce and you are actually not paying, actually the reduction of your tax money paying for public ed has been reduced by $20 billion in just the last 3 years.

This action by the PUSD is appalling. A simple google search brings up horrific facts about the CTA USING OUR CHILDREN to demonize the taxpayer - which US PARENTS AND eventually our own children! Web Link

Whats with the corrupt union guys language. Is he from Austria or something. He sounds like Rosa Lucksinberg. And I like the way they say "Buy American" when they'vegotta beef. We need to get rid of the unions. They trash everything that is good about this coutry. They started with the communists and then the Kennedy brothers opened the door. Count me as PRO--Education and ANTi-----UNION

Surely such a resolution to support teachers leaving our children would be yanked from the agenda. I know the board is not bright on spending (or NOT), on expensive, worthless consultants, but would they so blatently flip-off the community, by supporting unions over our children.

Let's not support regressive taxation in any form. There's no reason why a parcel tax has to be regressive.

I like that a CA teacher can't spell 'furlow', and CTA is quoted as saying “Education activists have started gathering in the Capitol Rotunda, chanting ‘Bail Out Schools!’”. Cool. Just like CTA and teacher unions across the county complained about banks and large corporation bail-outs. After ARRA and Ed Jobs Acts that funneled $10+ billion into education across the country.........they just want more. More......More........More.....More......

There's Start Afresh always trying to tear people down. Can't we have a civil conversation that talks about gutting our unsustainable educational system without the name calling and tearing people down? Why do people get so upset anyway about having their salaries and pensions cut? Why do people get so upset about their kids' classroom sizes being expanded from 20 to 30? Can't we be clinical and just talk about the numbers? It's only math.

I think it is amazing that people cannot see what is coming to this state. Every other state has taken dramatic steps to cut costs and reduce liabilities and we have sat and really done very little and we have a 26 billion dollar deficit. People with money and businesses just keep leaving this state because of high taxes and we just do not get it. The house is beginning to come down and now the rats are beginning to turn on each other.

1. Any corporation that sends jobs overseas will need to pay a higher tax rate to cover for the cost of unemployment.
2. The US government will be required to purchase Made In America items. That is not saying the company must be American, but the products need to be made here providing Jobs.
3. Illegal immigrants must leave or be deported. The country they are from will have to pay for their deportation or the sum of the cost will be deducted from the amount of aid that we give them.
4. All companies that hire illegal immigrants will be fined the amount to keep someone on unemployment for 1 year per violation.
5. Children must have at least one parent that is a citizen to receive citizenship. There will be no more anchor babies.
6. If you are on welfare, then the government reserves the right to put you to work.
7. Inmates can be used to work in the fields where we are told that the Americans will not work. The will be paid by the farmers at a rate of 2.00 per hour. Half of that will go back to the prison so they can pay their own way. 1.00 will be kept by the inmate. That is double what they are paid for work now and less that the farmers currently pay allowing for a lower food cost.
8. People on welfare will be drug tested. If you come up positive for drug use, then you will not get the welfare.
9. All government employees and teachers will need to take a 10% decrease in pay. Most companies did this why should the government be any different.
10. All cost having to do with the incarceration of an illegal will be deducted from the amount of aid we are giving the country they are from. Why should we continue to help your country when the people are coming here.
11. All laws passed by lawmakers will pertain to them as well. If you want to keep healthcare then that is what you will get as well.

Dear Start Afresh,
You tell me "Sensitive - Is there a nice way to point out the hypocrisy of the protesters?" Why call them names? One of the reasons I never ever read or contribute to this post is because of the name callers. Start Afresh is just trying to razzle-dazzle us by calling teachers hypocrites. That's not nice. I'm fair and balanced. Start Afresh should not be calling teachers hypocrites even if they are lazybones. But I don't think the lazybones teachers should be getting all bent out of shape and attacking everyone just because people want to take away their wages and benefits. Can't we all just get along without screaming and criticizing each other?

To 'Sensitive' - Did I call anyone a name? Or just connect the dots, quote from the media and point out hypocrisy.
As for "screaming and criticizing" - did you look at all the chanting and political attacks the teachers and their union leaders have been doing all week?
