Why is progress and/or improvement so quickly labeled a waste of taxpayer money. Improvements to Niles Canyon are long overdue. The number of fatalities and other traffic incidents is staggering. Also, if big rigs are allowed to continue using this road as a connector route, it needs to join the 21st century.

"Why ruin one of the most beautiful drives in the bay area?" - probably because Congress is passing out stimulus money for road projects so we can give people jobs, so one or more of our wonderful elected officials couldn't figure out some place else to spend the money.

The problem with this road is that it is too narrow and it has some very dangerous bridge approaches and underpasses. That scenery won't be that enjoyable for you if another vehicle crosses the line and kills or seriously injures one of your loved ones.
Whether they improve it or not, they need to get the trucks off that road. If they can ban trucks on I-580 from Castro Valley to Oakland, they sure ought to be able to ban them from Niles Canyon. Besides, many of the trucks are going through Niles Canyon so they can avoid the truck inspection station on I-680.

You can tell who the people are who want to control other people's lives. Just let things be. Fix the potholes before spending millions on very little change. If you don't want to have a head on then don't drive the road. Better yet stay home. LOL

I have to say that I am very sadden to see the removal of the trees in Niles Canyon. I drive the canyon everyday to work here in Pleasanton. On friday nite when I saw all the machines digging and cutting down the trees, it brought back memories of Fern Gully. Yes, a children's movie, told by the animals, insects and plants that live there. It brought tears to my eyes seeing this happening in my backyard. If there is a way to stop CALTRANS, i'm all ears.

Thanks to the hundreds of you who have sent letters or called opposing the Niles Canyon road widening project, and the more than 60 people who were out protesting the destruction on Saturday, state Senator Ellen Corbett's office has set up a public meeting with CalTrans Director Bijan Sartipi for Wednesday, March 9th at 11 am in Fremont to discuss community concerns about the environmental destruction in lower Niles Canyon along Alameda Creek due to the Niles Canyon project.
The meeting will be held tomorrow at 11 am at the Fremont Senior Center, Wing B, located at 40086 Paseo Padre Parkway in Fremont.
If you can attend this meeting please come speak out to insist this unnecessary, controversial and environmentally destructive project be stopped!
If you cannot attend the meeting tomorrow, click on this action alert to send a letter to CalTrans and your city, state and federal officials opposing this unnecessary destruction.
Be sure to tell CalTrans and your elected officials what you think of the meeting being scheduled on a week day when most people cannot attend, with only two days notice.

The only thing that needs fixing for the Niles Canyon route is a traffic light (or roundabout) at Murphy’s corner (where Paloma Rd, Niles Canyon Rd, and Pleasanton Sunol Rd meet). I doubt that this will cost $80,000,000.
Are the engineers that screwed up I680 carpool lane with the stupid express lane the same ones behind the Niles Canyon scam? I bet you the company responsible for cutting down all the trees along the canyon creek, is owned by the same fool that planted grass shoots along the I680 Washington Blvd curve. This company is probably owned by a former CalTrans engineer trying to supplement their $10,000 per month retirement pension.
Take the 80 million and extend the 4th lane on I680 Sunol Grade northbound from the weigh scales to the 84 merge.
