An important message from PUSD

The Pleasanton Unified School District is making a slight change to the 2010/11 school year calendar. This change makes the school calendar more consistent for families with students at varying grade levels and allows the District to implement a high school finals schedule (two times per year) with two hour finals for each class.

The change affects two instructional days as follows:

Friday, December 17, will become a minimum day for students in grades
1-12. Previously, this day was slated to be a minimum day for grades 1-8 only. Individual school sites will publish the specific schedules for this minimum day, including kindergarten schedules.

Friday, March 11, will become a minimum day for students in grades 1-12. Previously, this day was slated to be a minimum day for grades 1-5 only. Individual school sites will publish the specific schedules for this minimum day, including kindergarten schedules.

Please feel free to contact your site administrator if you have any
questions.

While I am OK with this, I do not understand the part where it says that this "and allows the District to implement a high school finals schedule (two times per year) with two hour finals for each class."

How can having less instructional time at the high school level allow the district to implement a high school schedule for finals so that each class has two hour finals?

Resident,

Clearly they have scooped instructional time out of two days, making them minimum days, and added that time to the previous 90-minute final periods to make them 120 minutes long.

What's so confusing about that?

They had to make the change in the final's schedule to stay compliant with a state law about weekly minutes. This was necessitated by the loss of the 7th period day at the high schools.
