Library needs volunteers

Original post made on Oct 4, 2010

Pleasanton Public Library needs volunteers for its Homebound Service, which provides homebound residents with library books, videos and CDs to community residents. Also, the library hosts the Pleasanton Reads Project that needs volunteer tutors to provide one-on-one instruction in both basic literacy and English as a second language to residents over 18. Students and tutors usually meet once per week at a mutually convenient time and place. Tutoring and all necessary materials are free of charge. Contact Jan Bauman at 931-3411 or jbauman@ci.pleasanton.ca.us.

I keep seeing requests for volunteers at the library. I phoned the number posted to offer my time and was told they don't need volunteers right now and put my name on a waiting list. No one has ever called me back. Why do they keep posting this request for volunteers if they don't need them?

Hi Pleasanton Resident, this was a part of our "hot picks" in our email Express editions. These are mostly pulled from our calendar database, meaning the library at one time put the listing out there. We weren't told to take the posting down, but we will use it less often as it seems there is no longer a need at this time.

Over the years I volunteered 3 times at the library and only got a call back the last time. They were advertising for help with ESL learners, taking books to shut-ins, repairing books, working on the book sale, etc. When I finally did get a call back the 3rd time, they put me to work restocking magazines - not very interesting. Did it for one year as I had made the commitment, but not one employee there ever spoke to me in a years time, except one time they needed me to do something in the office for them one day. Won't volunteer there again.
