California's Republican gubernatorial candidate, Meg Whitman, is getting hit from all sides today on immigration-- not just because of her flip-flopping on the topic, but because of the shocking allegations being brought forward by her nanny of nine years, Nicky Diaz Santillan.
At a press conference yesterday, the former housekeeper choked back tears as she described her treatment by Whitman:
Santillan said she asked Whitman for help in finding an immigration attorney in June 2009, and explained to her that she moved from Mexico because she had "no job, no food, no place to live, and for that reason we made a decision to move here."
Whitman terminated her not long after she made the appeal, Santillan said, telling her, "don't say anything to my children, I will tell them you already have a new job and that you want to go to school and from now on, you don't know me and I don't know you. You never have seen me, and I have never seen you. Do you understand me?
Whitman "treat me as if I was not a human being," Santillan added, suggesting the candidate was "throwing me away like a piece of garbage."
wow, i found that the SEIU is already playing attack ads on Meg Whitman based on this controversy
the basis of Gloria Allred's statement that Meg Whitman is lying is a letter was sent from the Social Security Administration to Whitman and her husband Griffith Harsh on April 22, 2003. It advises the couple that the Social Security number of their housekeeper, Nicky Diaz, did not match their files. The back of the letter includes a handwritten note, which Allred said was written by Harsh, that reads: "Nicky, please check this. Thanks."
of course, the fact is that a SS # mismatch isn't knowledge of legal status, and knowledge of an SS # mismatch isn't legal grounds to fire someone. In fact the letters from the SSA state explicitly that an employer may not fire someone or assume employment status based upon such a letter

I assume that the Harsh family has an education. We also assume that when you hire someone and they can barely speak English it may make you think.
Let's be real. If you drive at 80mph on the highway and you are pulled over does the officer care if you saw the speed limit sign or not?
Sorry I question the honesty of this candidate. And after spending $119M of her own money I would question, Why? Why spend so much money on a campaign that could be so easily be derailed. Since you are dishonest you could have given Nicky $1M and she would have happily moved back to Mexico never to be heard from again. What poor judgement!
Being so cheap when it comes to someone that worked in your house for nine years and so spendthrift when it comes to your own self-aggrandizement is so pathetic!

Isn't it interesting that party one, Nicky, freely admits she broke many laws and is in this country illegally. Then party two, Meg Whitman and her husband, follow all rules (beyond what most normal people would do), pays their housekeeper well above market rates, pays payroll taxes, etc., and it is party two that is the bad guy in this situation? Up is down and down is up in this crazy world we live in these days.

Nicky Diaz Santillan needs to be arrested and prosecuted for social security fraud, tax fraud, perjury, and illegally entering this country, PERIOD. Why is she still roaming around freely and creating frivolous lawsuits as if she has rights like the rest of us? Meg paid her $23 an hour. That's twice as much as people demand for the same type of service. Which also suggests that Meg never exploited her. I see illegals standing at Home Depot asking for only $10 an hour. The only thing this woman will get is jailtime.
This is no doubt one of Jerry Brown's sleezy political tactics. I guess things never change with this guy. Where does she find the money to hire Gloria Allred? This is another reason why I would not vote for Jerry Brown.

This is just another instance of a politician catering to her base with a strong policy statement on a divisive issue, and that policy has just come back to bite her.
Meg Whitman is very clear about her "tough, common sense immigration reform". She says she will "conduct workplace inspections of suspected businesses" that are "modeled after drug seizure raids". She doesn't give any wiggle room for employers who "follow all rules (beyond what most normal people would do), pays their housekeeper well above market rates, pays payroll taxes, etc.". Web Link
It really comes down to a question of whether or not Meg Whitman really believes in her platform and is ready to enforce it -- even if it means she, her neighbors, friends and supporters who hire housekeepers, nannies, cooks and gardeners who are in the US illegally pay the same consequences as any other offender who hires an illegal.
Oh, and BTW, I found it rather ironic that as a proponent for English only in the US, Meg Whitman not only has an "Espanol" language selection for her pages, she has a slew of Political ads under her "Latinos for Meg" pulldown -- and they're all in -- you guessed it -- Espanol! And then there's her Chinese language selection . . . I guess it's OK to speak another language until after you vote . . .

No, she is NOT getting hit on all sides, and she's NOT flip=floppping...LEFTIST ACTIVIST CHEAT'n CHET. From day one she said she HAD HER PAPERS, WHICH MOST EMPLOYERS DO NOT ! ! ! She has repeated she would take a lie detector test...ALRED and BROWN will NOT. Only the most stupid people would fall for such a dirty election by such corrupt political activists as the scum in the POLITICAL COMMITTEE OF THE SEIU UNION and the political scum in the nurses union in all CA elections. EXCEPT, today CNN said they checked this is all setup lies...CNN called SOCIAL SECURITY TODAY...
OFFICE said Whitman did nothing wrong....MOST employers do FAR LESS !!

I still want a competent women who to so talented she made herself a Billionaire.....she did not marry money, she did not inherit money...she EARNED money and made herself a Billionare. She is currently 332 on Forbes 400 list of mostly males, except for OPRAH, 2 Walton (walmart) sisters, Steve Wynns wife.
Meg and her husband came to Northern CA as young marrieds. He was not a doctor or physician but a NEURO SURGEON at STANFORD Univ! !Quite cerebral AND precise. Meg set about making ebay a success...creating her own Success...rivaling top men in the US. ONLY the most pathetically JEALOUS would attempt to belittle her (or their) accomplishments....doing so only belittles the scared, whining politicos ! NO petty STUNT should interfere giving CA a competent,k successful Governor. Not an old recycled gov who has never held a job in the real world.....just one political job to another political job for 50 years.

Most INDIVIDUAL employers never ask FOR or see papers. Even tho going thru a 'cleaners agency' Meg DID ask and got PAPERS ! bUT how could she know the woman had criminally purchased papers. Now, WHY has't that criminal woman been either arrested for Soc Sec FRAUD, or deportedd as illegal. Instead RICH bit** DEM activist Gloria ALRED is doing JUST LIKE she did in SCHWARZENEGGER'S ELECTION... ALONG IN CAHOOTS WITH THE CA DEM PARTY....HIRED A WOMAN TO PLAY ROLE OF PHONY ''VICITM''. sCHWARZENEGGER'S WAS NEVER HEARD FROM AGAIN. THIS is a desperate way the CA dem party, along with their rich party donor to created such 'theatre'. SAD for our stated of CA who so needs to be saved from the damage and horrors that Brown left us with his last time in Sacto...his damaged tortures us daily.

Meg hired an agency; it is the agency that was supposed to be in charge of checking the employee's legal status.
This all seems like something Brown is using in order to win votes. I speak Spanish and watched the debate in the Spanish channel. Jerry did nothing but attack Meg, he had nothing constructive to talk about other than attack, attack, attack.
I am voting for Meg. As for the illegal person whining about how she got fired: she is ILLEGAL, why hasn't she been deported yet? Why aren't we focusing on the right things, like DEPORTING this illegal alien?

Meg did not employ the made through an agency. You are making up a story that is not factual. She directly employed her housekeeper. The real problem for Meg is she will not tell the truth and she is not being honest.

Chet...at it again, eh? Lying thru your missing teeth? Anything to get your leftist Democrats in office.
About your statement..."Meg did not employ the made through an agency. You are making up a story that is not factual. She directly employed her housekeeper. The real problem for Meg is she will not tell the truth and she is not being honest"
... trouble with that is that the Agency owners have already stated the maid began working for this Agency, tho a couple years prior to them owning it.
Here is the Agency owner's statement...
"As already reported, Nicky Diaz did fill out our standard candidate questionnaire. In that questionnaire, Nicky indicated that she was legally able to work in the United States," the Hillens wrote. "Further, Nicky provided us and our client with the documents that our client would need to complete the I-9 form as was their legal obligation as an employer."
