Dear Editor:

By including the word "Muslims" in your headline and "The Muslims" in the body of the piece, you seem to be implying that all Muslims are part of this local group, when I'm sure that this is not the case.

Further, by labeling them as such, you are implicitly separating them out as a distinct group from the rest of the community. Would you use similar phraseology with "The Christians," "The Jews," or "The Atheists"?

Respectfully,

I completely agree with Cyrus' post. Your choice of words makes your article very biased.

Thank goodness Pleasanton is going to get even more diversity. We need it!

Personally, I think Pleasanton is a diverse community.

I am interested in where the "story" is though?

I would be really offended by the title of this article if I were a Muslim. Try rephrasing it to "New Muslim Church at Hacienda" or "Muslim Church at Hacienda".

Not church. Muslim Center or Muslim Religious Center (or even Mosque).

What an unfortunate choice of headline. As your article makes clear, the Muslims are already in Pleasanton. They are just moving.

And why post this in Town Square now, 20 days after the article date?

Why do I have the sense that the above pro-Muslim/anti Pleasanton Weekly comments are planted? The headline of the article is correct. Why do you Muslims not like to be called Muslims? Hmmmmm??? We are onto you.

Yes, by all means let's be politically correct, after all you know what happens when you infidels incur the wrath of Osama.

The idea that the reporting of this article by having the word Muslim in the heading is biased is complete nonsense! If this were a Christian group or Jewish group the reporter would have mentioned this fact as well... Let's drop the politically correct talk and speak clearly and truthfully...I see no bias here, just the facts...This article should not offend anyone,if it does, perhaps you are overly sensitive to being offended...

To make something out of nothing or to take a generic statement out of context is what may of you are doing! Most importantly is not the use of Muslim over Muslims...but what the community of such said group will offer and bring to the community!

If you get so offended so easily in life you will find much disappointment...so lets not get twisted on play of words here! The comment was fine..it was informational...but apparently some of you are so blinded by misguided emotions....you do only more damage than you do good!

Dominic said: "perhaps you are overly sensitive to being offended..."

No kidding Dominic! You hit the nail on the head, because, of course, the posters on this forum (the many Cholos aside) in this "community of character" would *never* insult someone by showing a lack of respect for someone else's culture.

Of course one should never take seriously the ever-popular "anonymous" poster whose comments on diversity were removed due to "disrespectful" commentary.

As for Frederick's comment . . . I'm sure he meant no disrespect. He just wants to see how animal control would handle something larger than a horse when he sees "the first camel running down Santa Rita Road."

And then there's Joe who, for our own protection only wants to make sure we all think about the "pro-Muslim" conspiracy because "Muslims [don't] like to be called Muslims?" and "We are onto you."

Thank goodness Steve is around to make sure there's an appropriate fear factor associated with this topic, because "you know what happens when you infidels incur the wrath of Osama."

---------------
Frankly, for me, the commentary on this article has nothing to do with being "blinded by misguided emotions" as john said. It's all about respect. Reporters in every type of media use the title of their articles/commentary to pull a reader in. The title of this article was an unfortunate choice of words. "Muslim Community Center Moving to Hacienda" would definitely have been more accurate and, one would hope, less inciteful to the kind of dis-respectful commentary we frequently see from posters on this forum.

Hopefully Ms Ciardelli will use the comments in this thread as a tool to understanding how simple word choices affect her reading public.

These posts remind me of that funny email that used to circulate about what to name the company holiday party so as not to offend religious groups...remember that? It's sad that there's still so much hatred in the world. Ease up, people. We're all equal.

If we indeed are all equal, we should be all intitled to the same kind of respect.

The initial post by Cyrus was very polite and raised a very valid point directly to the author of the article in question.
The bickering, labeling and disrepectful commentary are completely unnecessary, in my opinion. What I would love to see is a response from Mrs.Ciardelli.

Tolerance, believe in it.

People . . . take a chill pill . . . wow. Yes, the title could be more specific, a little more innocuous. Some people are just looking for something to bitch about. You think the person who typed the article is anti-Muslim? Maybe the person was in hurry, had a deadline, was just trying to keep the title short. Give em a break. Read the article, I did. I say for those of you who like jump to conclusions, send Zaheer Siddiqui an email and see what he thinks.

Muslims moving to Hacienda. Christians moving to Hacienda. Atheists moving to Hacienda. All those statements are true, and I'm sure in any given week at least one Muslim, Christian, Atheist and people of various other belief (unbelief) systems are move out too.

Good lord, what's the issue with saying "Muslims moving to Hacienda" in a headline? It's a true statement, and it's newsworthy because there aren't many gathering-places for Muslims in our valley. No where does the headline imply that all Muslims are packing up and moving to Hacienda (and if it did, would you believe it?).

And yes, more diversity is a good thing.

Some one needs a hobby.

By the way, I'll bet a Zoroastrian moved to the Bay Area last week-anyone want to protest that statement in advance?

Chris, ease up. Geez. We're all equal and demand equal respect, but I don't respect people who don't know how to spell. (Intitled is spelled "entitled." I don't have tolerance for ignorant people no matter what religious background or race they originate from.

Admit the truth, Hollywood and the main stream media have always portrayed Muslims as the bad guy, always, and still do. Americans have been programed to hate Muslims. 9-11 was an inside job and blamed on Muslims. It was the Israelis and American traitors, Mossad and the CIA. Of course the Project For The New American Century (PNAC) members, who were in control of the White House, were a big part of it too. The PNAC stated "the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event -- like a new Pearl Harbor", refering to American Imperialism for the 21st century. Members include Dick Cheney, Jeb Bush, John Bolton, Scooter Libby, Donald Rumsfeld, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Robert Zoellick, Elliot Abrams, Richard Armitage, Steve Forbes, William Kristol and more sociopaths. First, thanks to the people who had constructive things to say.

Second, I find it hilarious that a minor quibble over the headline and copy somehow turned into some people's diatribes against Islam and the Bush Administration.

Finally, to people who thought I was offended by the word Muslims and who had such useful things to say, like:

"Why do you Muslims not like to be called Muslims? Hmmmmm??? We are onto you."

a) I'm not Muslim, and b) my quibble is not over the use of the word Muslim, but rather over the words "Muslims," implying "The Muslims" as the body of the article states. By using a definite article, it implies that all Muslims are being referred to, when I'm sure that was not the author's intent. "Local Muslims," "Area Muslims" "A group of Pleasanton Muslims" or whatever else would have been more accurate and more descriptive. That is all.

You know Cyrus Farivar, if you payed attention you should learn something. I would find it hilarious, if it weren't so sad, that you must be so ignorant to the facts of life. You probably find the genocide in the Middle East hilarious too. Maybe the first step for you would be to quit worshipping America. Here is a link to teach you about the real America. I sincerely hope that you take the time to read the article, it would benefit us all.
