GATE Plan Flawed Schools & Kids, posted by Peter, a resident of the Mohr Park neighborhood, on May 12, 2008 at 7:27 am
Everyone is talking about cutting administrators. I agree! Look at the GATE plan or the school site plans. How much money out of those plans goes to pay district office administrator's salaries? Why do we need a director of GATE at the district office? (they call it another name - coordinator - I think), why do we need two directors of curriculum? why do we need a director of assessment, maybe if the state stops testing kids so much we can save money. Look at San Ramon do they have 4 directors doing curriculum to the amount of over half a million dollars? What does the assistant superintendent in charge of curriculum do?
Lets see, if we cut even one administrative position, just think how the sites would have money to really run a GATE program. Pleasanton parents don't be fooled, we do not have a GATE program, we have a way of funneling money to administrative salaries. The board should NOT approve a GATE plan that provides money to administrative salaries, for that matter school site plans should not be approved that fund salaries of administrators. Start asking questions now, before the board approves the new GATE plan and school plans. School site councils do have a say so in spending, exercise your right. KEEP THE MONEY FOR THE KIDS AT THE SITES!!! The board meets on the 2nd (tomorrow night) and 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Come to the meeting and let your voices be heard! or email a board member today! Go to this site to get the email address of board members.

Ages ago I was in GATE when I went through Pleasanton's school system. I only remember attending one or two classes of extracurricular pre-algebra in elementary school (during recess). I didn't know anything else GATE did. Guess it is still like that?

why does "Announce to the World" have to put her bitterness about the speaker system in threads that are not dealing with the speakers at amador. Start you own thread? Grow up.

I wanted to let parents know that the School District will be approving the district's GATE application at the Board meeting this Tuesday, June 3, 7pm. It is item 10.6 on the consent calendar. This item can be pulled for discussion if members of the public would like that discussion.
I first wanted interested parties to know that the funding for GATE does not come out of the General Fund. That is, not doing GATE does not save the district from having to not make a cut somewhere else. The funding does come from the State but can only be used for GATE.
With that being said, it is still important that our tax money is spent wisely. I advise you email the School Board members before Tuesday afternoon so they have a chance to hear your viewpoints before the vote is taken on Tuesday evening (Board has a meeting starting at 4pm so would not see any email coming in late Tuesday afternoon). You can also go to the Board meeting and ask to comment on this item so the Board can have this discussion. The Board would like to hear from those who had success stories as well as problems with the program so that the funding is best utilized. The amount of money expected to be received from the State for GATE is $120,349.
