Proposed Water Rates-Seniors Watch Out! Around Town, posted by Tim, a resident of the Another Pleasanton neighborhood neighborhood, on Apr 17, 2010 at 10:27 am
Seniors need to read the fine print carefully in the proposed water rate changes. Note that the 20% senior discount goes away if you exceed 40 Ccf in water usage for a two month period. This includes the discount for water AND SEWER use. For me that means no discount during the summer watering months. Using 2009 usage, my charges increase by almost FORTY percent during the March thru October period. Total increase for the year is 26% for me.
I guess I can let the grass and garden dry up. The new rates seem like an outrageous increase to me.

So Tim, why should everyone else subsidize us if we exceed the cheap allocation? Use more water, lose the discount. Simple and fair. If the discount did not decrease the rates by so much there would not be the cooresponding increase to what everyone else pays all of the time.
Just because we are older does not mean that we "deserve" everything at a discount!

I'm old and happen to have a "large" yard. I guess I could sell the house I have lived in for 20 years and try to find a house with a cement yard. I avearge less than the 40Ccf for two months for the year. If they want me to use 40Ccf or less for water per two month period, then base it on the whole year.

I'm cutting my front lawn by 50% and filling in with rock and drought resistant plants...nobody sees the back, so I don't really care if it dies off. Oh ya, I'm going to start to stink a little too so if you smell something down on Main St. that would be me.

They are under NO obligation to give you anything at all so you really should not tell them what they need to do.
I thought it was just the milleniums or generation Ys or Zs or whatever who are so entitled. Tim, your attitude and drama are shameful. Being "old" does not require the rest of society to subsidize everything. Lower water rates, no parcel tax, whatever.
Sell your house if that's what you want to do. My late Mom called that cutting off your nose to spite your face. If you exceed the base rate for water or electricity then you don't get the cheap rates. Get over it.

FYI: There are a few amongst us who are breathearians. We have no need to drink contaminated earthly water. My sustenance comes from a highly evolved spiritual source...and it's not bottled.
I always carry a few bottles around, fill up and go home!

I think discounts should be need-based; so if you qualify as low-income, then get the discount subsidized by other rate-payers, but don't use too much water.
Consider letting the grass go, and putting in drought tolerant plants and a drip irrigation system.
