What are your pet peeves? Around Town, posted by Pleasanton Parent, a resident of the Pleasanton Meadows neighborhood, on Jan 9, 2010 at 2:17 pm
What are things people do around town that just get to you? Here are a few of mine:
- Individuals who cruise in the left lane on the freeway (during non-rush hour traffic). Move over!
- Individuals who wait in the middle of a parking aisle for someone to back out, preventing the cars from behind from being able to pass.
- Individuals who wait until just before the Hacienda exit to merge onto 580 E....usually blocking the offramp.
- Individuals who wait until just before the 680 onramp (heading west on 580) before trying to merge in.
- Individuals that park their cars in front of other peoples' houses when the street parking in front of their home is open and their driveway is as well.

People who drive large cars- trucks, suburbans, raised Jeep Cherokees- that park in compact spots and then leave you two inches to open your door.(Try that with an 89 yr old grandmother and the situation becomes worse- 18 yr old did that the other day when I took my grandmother to the store. I was fuming!)

But Joe, you really should pay attention to what reader has told us on other posts -- the stats show a RISE in income and there is NO economic down turn here in Pleasantville. So just do what EVERY other district in the universe has done and vote to tax yourself. Except here, we will be using the tax not for improving education but for funding cell phones, car allowances and teacher raises. You got a problem with that? You must be un-American.

I agree--we should let education funding take the brunt of the current economic situation. When our kids aren't getting into college and our home values deflate, we'll be comforted by the mythical belief that despite full budget transparency, the evil educators really would have spent all that money texting in cars with full gas tanks.
In the end, it's the children who win if we don't pass a parcel tax.

-morons who think that a publicly funded education is a waste of money even though they received one themselves
-odd shallow statements about people making shallow statements
- those that use the word ditto
-people who block the grocery store aisle staring at soup
-those that can't turn right from Owens onto Hacienda even though they have an open lane
-those who complain about everything like ice rinks, stoneridge extension, school budgets, traffic lights, dog parks, etc
-those who refer to every issue in the city as a "quality of life" issue
-those who can't park between the printed white lines
-those who choose to take up 3 parking spots because their F-350 4x4 dully won't fit in the spot, but really want to park close to the store and they don't want to get a scratch
-those who make ridiculously longs posts on the forums :-)

I second that? Why encourage this neagtivity. We need to raise our vibrations to a higher level of good... how about "What random act of kindness have you done today?" or "How have you brightened someones elses day today?" C'mon weekly...

My pet peeve around town is drivers that come to an intersection and the stop!! And also people that block the aisles in grocery stores by leaving their carts in the middle of the aisle so no one can get by them. And people who take up 2 parking spots with their large vehicles when they are in a compact lot!!
Mostly, male drivers that will not let me over when I need to change lanes!! They just ignore you unless you come aggressively close to their vehicle. Driving is not a competition, guys. It needs to be a cooperative venture or it ends up in an accident!
And yes, let's have more random acts of kindness around town!!

People on cell phones in cars, stores, banks, restaurants, sporting events, etc. No one wants to overhear your conversation or be the victim of your lack of attention behind the wheel.
'Green' anything. It's all a marketing ploy and only helps to sooth the guilt of urban liberals.
Home-warming fires in our residences being outlawed by our nanny state local govt.
global warming---you've got to be kidding! Some people still insist that man and not the sun or other environmental factors cause climate to change, even though the climate has always been in a state of change.

Sorry, Lee..I've been guilty of the merging issue you mentioned. The problem is, many folks I've let in insist on driving under the speed limit once they are let in.
Most people drive the same route everyday, so it's not like they don't know when they have to get over. Just plan better and merge earlier and don't wait until you're 500 feet from your exit. Road rage is not pretty, so avoid it by not cutting people off. Be proactive.

Rich, childless, old people who think education isn't important or just don't care because they're too ignorant to see how public schools still affect them.
People who think the school parcel tax is frivolous.
People who think Pleasanton schools are not in trouble.

People driving recklessly while talking on their cell phone.
Neighbors that park thier cars under our tree, in front of our house and then complain about the tree leaves.
People that insist on driving in the fast lane at slow speeds.
People that burn wood on no-wood-burnding days.
People that walk by with thier dog and allow thier dog to dump on my lawn.
Parents that don't keep their kids under control in public places.
Parents that blame their kids' teachers for thier poor academic performance, but are not engaged in the process and elect dolts to the school board.
Helicopter parents.
People talking loudly on their cell phones in public places.
People talking to their friends at the store while blocking the aisle.
Bicyclists that are rude, behave like anarchists, and don't obey the traffic laws.
People that buy one cup of coffee and occupy a 4-seat table for hours at a coffee place.
Soccer moms that drive huge Suburbans, talk on their cell phones wherever they are, and think they are God's gift to mankind.
Soccer moms in big Suburbans, that live in Ruby Hills, go through the drive-up at McDonalds, and wait until they are asked for their order to think about what they want for the 6 kids in the car.

Residents / visitors who park front wheels to the curb on our many courts. This is illegal yet not enforced unless you complain. Emergency vehicles must stop and backup to complete their turn at the end of a court potentially losing critical minutes. A court is just like any other street and the parking laws are the same.
People who ride bikes in traffic and create a dangerous situation. Use the bike lane please.

Lee,
You said your pet peave was "drivers that come to an intersection and the stop!!" What does that mean?
Are you by chance the woman in our neighborhood that continually is running stop signs while talking on her cell phone?
And, people sometimes take up two parking spots because the business marks off their parking spaces for pregnant roller skates. Sorry, some of us don't want our car doors nicked when the soccer mom and her 6 kids in the Suburban pull into that tiny space and then throw open their car doors.

John, was that a crack at "us" in Pleasanton or "us" in this country? And this forum IS the correct place to vent, so when you cut me off in line I don't break your jaw. I have to get it out of my system somehow before I go out into this world, right?

....Self-appointed pace cars (usually pius prius) that creeps along in left lane on freeway.
....Hacienda straigt ahead cars that out of half-dozen lanes, selfishly sits self in right lane, causing 8 cars behind to idle polluting engines....thoughtless dummy.
....Parents of spoiled kids they pretend to love, but teach 'oh it's OK THEY HAVE to stop for you, princess" ....instead of RESPONSIBILY teaching children they pretend to love to WALK DEFENSIVELY in parking lots and not meander or dart behind cars....we don't have eyes on our REAR bumpers.
.... INcompetant drivers of TOY cars that can't seem to FIT them BETWEEN 2 white lines....instead selfishing ON a white line, thus PREVENTING a normal car from using the next space!

All the gullible that fall for the world's oldest sales technique....quick have to close deal today...before it's too late..the kind your father always said don't ever fall for that trick.
The gullible & ignorant selling the 'last 30 years are hottest' scare tactics and FORCING THEIR RELIGION of 'warming' down our throats with COSTLY laws ! Tough with the entire country frozen from coast to coast for an entire month...COLDEST in 50 years !! Wake up. actually the entire decade was cooler that last several. NO shock, that's what to earth does...warm and cool and warm and cool...just like your fifth grade teacher taught you. Teachers today know that , don't they ?? Oh that's right, neither math or science are their stong points. (just peddle propaganda)

People cruising on the left lane of the freeway and not merging for faster moving traffic. They know the law says they are supposed to move even if they are going the speed limit, but instead they like playing cop. Hopefully they won't do this to some lunatic who may not find this funny at all.
Dogs off a leash.
People who think my lawn is their pet's bathroom.
People who look surprised when I decline a rip-off foul tasting Starbucks served on a paper cup.
People who own those annoying little rats that pass for a dog, who yap these really piercing barks for hours and hours, and when you ask them to please get them a vet approved bark collar they find it offensive. They don't have the heart to put it on their little rats, but they don't care that I have to hear to the damn thing yapping for hours and hours when the owners go out.
Packs of joggers who think they have the right to block traffic. There was one this Saturday morning on Main Street. They just dart in front of traffic like they own the road, and forces everyone behind to go at 3 mph. Talk about selfish.

People with superficial, meaningless & trivial pet peeves.
My tip, head down to Main St., head north, stop @ the Wine Steward, walk upstairs, instruct Jim to pour you a flight (or three) TA DA! No more pet peeves!
Unless you find that 07' Bandol just tooooo smokey for your tastes, that always bums my afternoon.

Carlos - exactly! These types of forums are places where people can vent. I would rather have people complain about poor drivers or disrespectful coworkers on here instead of taking out a gun to open fire on the freeway or in the office.
-another pet peeve - people who think that anyone who complains about things is a whiner and doesn't understand how good they have it.
By the way, isn't a pet peeve just something that is annoying to you, but not really a major issue in the grand scheme of things?
Posted by letsgo, a resident of the Another Pleasanton neighborhood neighborhood, on Jan 11, 2010 at 10:24 pm
more than enough - that's why they had to change it from "global warming" to "climate change" - that way, no matter what happens, its out fault.
"Teachers today know that , don't they ?? Oh that's right, neither math or science are their stong points. (just peddle propaganda)"
But c'mon - did you really need to cut on the teachers in this thread? Don't they get bashed enough elsewhere? And I think you are wrong - the math and science teachers know a heck of a lot of math and science.

A few pet peeves
(1) People who stand in front of the sample counter at Trader Joe's while eating said sample, thereby preventing other people from partaking.
(2) Harley riders who ride through downtown on bikes that sound like a jet aircraft taking off.
(3) People who sit on other peoples' tails even when they are driving the speed limit in the slow lane.
(4) People who get in the express line at the grocery store, but clearly have well over 15 items in their cart. Either learn to read or learn to count please.
(5) People who talk on their cellphone while driving, particularly those who do this while backing out of a parking spot!!!
Posted by MOM, a resident of the Another Pleasanton neighborhood neighborhood, on Jan 12, 2010 at 6:35 am
The kiosks at the mall bothering you to look at their stuff while I'm on a time schedule. If I need your wares I will come over myself! Leave me alone.

(1) People who come to an intersection with a four-way stop and then when it's your turn to go straight, they turn left into your path.... as if you were supposed to be able to read their mind and *know* that they *meant* to turn left, even though their blinker wasn't on. (and why was their blinker not on? Why, because they're on the cell phone!)
(2) People who roll right on through the crosswalk on a right hand turn at a stop sign, without looking right. Hello, dangerous! One day there's going to be a person there...!
(3) People who drive right on your tail on the freeway in stop-and-go traffic and brake waaaayyy too close to your rear bumper, time and again. Why? Everyone else is going the same stop-and-go speed... pay attention...!

My pet peeve is, people thinking that just because I'm on my cell phone that I forgot how to drive. There is absolutley no difference if I'm on the phone or talking to my three kids, or changing the DVD, or having a conversation with my spouse, or eating Burger King, or thumbing through my ipod, or changing my GPS, or putting the pacifier back in (in the seat behind me), or looking for an address... I could go on listing all of the legal distractions but I won't. All I'm asking for is for everyone to stop giving me dirty looks while I'm on the phone. With all of those things going on in my mini van, the last thing I need is to add is chasing down do-gooders giving me dirty looks.

Fabiola - STOP ALL THOSE THINGS! I'm not sure what yoru point was, but you sound like a seriously dangerous driver.
People are giving you dirty looks when you are on your phone is because its ILLEGAL. People can't talk on a cell phone and drive...there are numerous studies that say that people talking on cell phones are worse than drunk drivers...now that's bad. Get off your phone - there really is nothing that is that important. You may realize that if you kill somebody.

Parents who feel that it's necessary to pop a DVD in to "entertain" their precious children, even if they're only going across town. Whatever happened to kids looking out the window, observing their surroundings, daydreaming? Some of the best memories I have are on long car trips, watching the scenery and thinking grand thoughts and inventions. So what if kids get a little restless at times and pinch each other and annoy you a little? That's what being a parent (and a kid) is all about. Deal.

People who wait in line to get free tasters at Costco, rather than moving along and coming back later. Or better yet, shell out $1.50 and buy a drink and hot dog.
People who think that want to convert the Pleasanton Hills into flat lots for mega mansions.
People who think Pleasanton Tax payers should help them pay for their new houses via low income housing programs.
People that moved to this little town and want to make it a big city place. Just leave it small and quaint! Isn't that why we came here?
City councils that vote in blocks, instead of being free and indepedent thinkers.

...people who slop over the W I D E white lines....which is a violation. Just pretend it's a thick glass wall....never to be penetrated !! Also, U turners that think it's L turning. U turns mean gently ROLL your wheels forward, while you are cranking you steering wheel...so much easier than just sitting there with sharp L turn, rubbing off your rubber and slopping 2 lanes over. If you roll a tiny bit forward you can double back in a tight smooth 'U'.
I think we need to start another PET PEEVES....LOVE IT....a
