A tough summer for freshmen training to play high school football

Summertime hasn't been leisurely as it used to be for the more than 100 eighth-grade graduates who have been sweating out these past 10 weeks in the weight rooms and on the fields at Amador Valley and Foothill high schools as they vie for good positions on the schools' freshmen football teams. My grandson Jordan Nally is one of them and I've seen him sweating and exhausted after mornings of practice in the summer's heat, yet always enthused by the game he's come to enjoy as he heads to his first year as an Amador Don.

Yes, they work hard, but I am sure they enjoy it. And the rest of us enjoy watching their games, going to cheer them on at the games.

Double days...I guess they call the two-a-days now or something. I remember all the fat linemen puking on all the afternoon runs.

Some linemen and overwweight. Hopefully, others will not tease them. Young people do not need to be teased. thank you...
