Did anyone else hear gunshots early this morning, around 5 AM? Crimes & Incidents, posted by Kevin, a member of the Alisal Elementary School community, on Oct 24, 2009 at 9:41 am
Hey, am I crazy, or did anyone else hear gunshots around 5 AM on October 24th?

I thought I heard, very faintly coming through my open window about that time, police over a loudspeaker talking. I distinctly heard, "come out with your hands up" several times, along with a lot of other talking I couldn't make out. Was I dreaming or was there some type of police encounter at about that time? Weekly staff, why not check it out?

Yesterday I saw that the Alameda County Sheriff's Dept was set up for what looked like training at the Utility Vault facility. I don't know if they were there this morning, but perhaps that is what was heard.

Yes, it was indeed the SWAT competition hosted by the Alameda County Sheriff Office called Urban Shield. One of the scenarios is being held at the Utility Vault location. for more info visit:

1) Are those griping about "preparing/warning" the community upset because it woke on a Sunday?
2) If so, would you be griping equally loud if there were no drill, the threat real, and the Police unprepared for a REAL event on a Sunday morning?
You people slay me. You want to feel safe and warm in your cozy little Pleasanton homes, yet don't want your sleep disturbed. What has this town come to?

Yep, Urban Shield was this weekend. We did a boy scout overnight event on the USS Hornet in Alameda and as we were leaving the ship, they were prepping for a big end of training celebration for all of the law enforcement people involved in the training exercise.
Yes, they did wake some people up (they actually did some exercises on one of the ships next to the hornet and we heard gun shots too) but these training exercises are important to prepare our law enforcement officers.

Relax, Another Gatetree Resident. I don't think the posts about the noise and gunshots were in the spirit of "griping." If you look at them with a clear mind, it's more curiosity: "am I crazy or....." "was I dreaming, or...." The person who posted the "nice way to warn us" message ended it with a smile, which was intended to convey what the written word alone often cannot: a smile, not a true complaint. The other post that could be considered negative just said it was "odd," and ended with a question mark, as in "don't you think it's odd?" I don't think we're so bad that we're griping about law enforcement preparedness when it disturbs our repose in our "safe little homes." From my own perspective, I'm glad when I hear the occasional gunshots from the training facility across the freeway; I'm happy that we have experienced law enforcement ready to risk their lives and deal with any situation that arises. It was just a little strange to hear those sounds drifting in my window and I wondered if there had been a serious incident here in town somewhere. I'm glad the original poster brought up the subject, because now I know what it was all about. I had concluded that someone nearby must have been watching a loud TV drama with their window open. [and that wasn't a complaint about neighbors] :-) [said with a smile]
