Respect and Civility Thread:
Around Town, posted by Annon, a resident of the Another Pleasanton neighborhood neighborhood, 7 hours ago
I wanted to re post a potion of a thread that I feel is really well pointed.
"I know emotions are high around many of the issues we, individually and as a country, are facing today. However, I do not understand how anyone, on either side of an issue, could possibly think that personally mocking, demeaning or denigrating someone else (from a poster on this forum to the President) helps the discussion, pulls anyone over to your side of the debate, leads to a solution, or even, bottom line, is morally the right thing to do.
I was going to say that online forums and blogs seem to have given some folks a false sense of security in that they can forget about treating each other with respect, but then I thought back to the recent round of town halls, and even the Sen. Wilson incident that started this thread. Maybe, instead, it's a kind of "mob mentality" that has taken over. It seems that when some individuals get around a group of people (whether on a forum or in a meeting) who believe the same way they do about an issue, they give themself permission to speak and act out in a way that they would never do face-to-face and one-on-one."

I am lost for my own words I admit and I am just as guilty as the next for my own emotional reaction at times. However, we need to work at solutions as a community I feel.
"You can sing about respect all day long, but if you don’t behave in a manner reflective of your self-respect, you won’t have followers. Leadership requires respecting others and treating others with civility – the act of being kind and courteous. Respect is earned, and it is often requested. When the inspiration to respect others is present, civility follows."

Marshal Rosenthal was a pioneer of Non Violent Communication.
This communication and similar versions are taught in prisons, major companies as well as Pleasanton Schools.
The PUSD teaches and implements A "Community Of Character" program.
*AS a family we try and go by these principals within our home and community. Our 6 year old child is doing BETTER than we as adult are, but WE are working on this!! I feel that as a COMMUNITY, WE should ALL be working REALLY HARD at this!
How many here on this forum can take a pledge to work towards implementing these principals within OUR COMMUNITY, including on this community FORUM??
How can we EXPECT our children as young a 5 to learn and implement these basic principals, if we as an ADULT are not willing to follow the same principals?
Building A Community Of Character:
Responsibility-
Do what you are supposed to do
Always do your BEST
Be ACCOUNTABLE for your choices
Compassion-
Be KIND to self, OTHERS and the ENVIRONMENT
HELP others in NEED
BE FORGIVING
Self Discipline-
Practice SELF CONTROL
Set goals and work towards them
STRIVE for PERSONAL IMPROVEMENT
Honesty-
TELL the TRUTH
Be TRUSTWORTY
Don't CEAT or STEAL
Respect-
Use GOOD MANNERS, not bad language
BE COSIDERATE, HONOR the FEELINGS OF OTHERS
DEAL PEACEFULLY WITH ANGER, INSULTS and DISAGREEMENTS
Integrity-
BE reliable, do what you say you will do
Have the COURAGE to DO THE RIGH THING
Build A GOOD REPUTATION

"I messages" taught in the PUSD School District Community Of Character.
Example:
I FEEL terrible when you report my post to the authorities, because I have a NEED to denigrate others including the President. Would you be WILLING to sit back and let me tear our community apart?
