Russia's Putin praises Obama!

Original post made by Bob, Foothill Farms, on Sep 18, 2009

Interesting article and one of the first I remember where the leader of Russia praises the US president while the rest of europe either remains silent or in the case of Poland and Chech republic feel betrayal. Anyboyd wondering what side the US president is on?

*Sigh* Here we go again. Please read beyond the flashing headlines on drudge or fauxnews.com. Obama DID NOT ABANDON EUROPE TO RUSSIA!!! Obama DID NOT CANCEL THE MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM!!! Here's the facts:

1) Bush's missile defense plan was just that - A PLAN! It was never implemented, it was never finalized, it was never deployed. Nothing had been built and in fact the missiles that were supposed to make up the system had not even been designed, much less built.

2) Bush's missile defense system was advertised as a defense against rogue states like iran, and bush himself claimed many times it was never a response to russia. The problem was, it was planned to target long-range missiles, while rogue states like iran and NK only have intermediate to short range missiles. Bush was planning a missile defense system to defend against a type of missiles its enemies don't have. That makes perfect sense.

3) Obama's plan is to replace that overreaching and fantastical system with one that has already been deployed elsewhere, will be ready to go much quicker, and will target the kinds of missiles that iran and other rogue states actually have.

4) I have to say this again. Russia's military is a shadow of its former self. If you honestly think russia poses any military threat to western europe as far as a military takeover is concerned, then good luck to you. The fact that western europe gets most of its natural gas and heating oil from russia is a bigger security threat to it than its tanks ever will be and no missile defense system will change that.

The president is on the side of doing something that actually addresses the problem at hand, instead of putting up some window shades that benefit your friends like haliburton and other defense contractors who would've built that huge wasteful system.

Thank you for bringing a breath of sanity to these forums. It is appreciated at least by one person here in P-town.

I like to think of facts, rational thought, and reality based thinking as the domain of non-partisans. Democrats can be just as guilty as Republicans.

History will certainly be a judge of Obama's decision. The best tacticians don't advertise their moves and if a move is advertised it might actually be a distraction. I'm confident that there's a lot of information we are not privy to that goes into making this decision. The reason to implement a long-range missile shield now instead of later is to discourage Iran from developing the capability. It is possible that either the discouraging is not working and something else must be tried or Iran is actively developing a different kind of weapon and we must adapt.

"first I remember where the leader of Russia praises the US president "

If I recall correctly, Boris Yeltsin praised Reagan and Bush Sr.

Thanks to all of you for helping me win my bet. My wife reads these blogs and she knows all of the blindly defending libs by name and I bet her drinks that Stay Cool, Poster Boy, reader, Stacey, but did not consider curious would respond and take turns patting each other on the back for their well thought out comments in support of Obama and his extremely liberal agenda. Stacy,
That is a good point, but the issue is that Bush's plan was to develop a system with technology that we don't currently have to counter a threat from an enemy who doesn't have the technology that it would guarding against. That seems rather odd.

Regardless, if iran really wanted to nuke a western power, perhaps the stupidest way to do it would be to use a missile. Instead, stick the bomb on a truck, drive it in the city or your choice, detonate it. You have both plausible deniability and a destroyed target. No missile defense system in the world would ever guard against that.

I happen to think missile defense is a big waste of time and money, and I'd rather Obama use this money for something else, but to claim that he's abandoning europe to the russians was a bit much...

Bob,
Thanks a lot. I just won dinner too! My wife reads these posts and I made a bet with her that in the face of so many overwhelming facts, that you would make some snarky post that wouldn't address and single point I made and instead would bash liberals or some such. She, however, bet that you would at least try to counter one of the points, but alas...Thanks for dinner!

Hey! Just wanted to let everyone know that this is my new favorite blog: Web Link It is refreshing to see intellectualism on the right as I'm so used to a type of anti-intellectual conservatism reigning the GOP for the past decade or so.

I also found this fun site today that looks interesting: Web Link

Interesting and in some cases intelligent dialogue going on here. Does anyone wonder why in November Obama said he would never reverse the decision to put missles in Poland and why he asks Hilliary Clinton to call the Prime Minister of Poland on his behalf to tell him of his decision to not do it? With the exception of Russia, no one thinks this is a great idea. This should be good for more lost votes for the democrats running for reelection in 2010. He better get everything done now because it is over next year.

Einstein, Once again, please refer to my post earlier in the thread that spells out in vivid detail that in fact Obama has not reversed the decision to put an anti-missile defense system in poland and czech republic. In fact, he's replacing a non-working, only-in-planning-stages system with one that'll be ready to go sooner and will target the threat better. Obama's votes, therefore, should be perfectly safe...

I was under the impression that an American President's charge was to please the American PEOPLE NOT to please Russian presidents. I have no doubt Putin would be delighted to fewer & lesser missles pointed at Russia....makes his goals much easier to attain.

Susan,
Are you suggesting that Obama runs every decision he makes by the Russians to make sure they gnash their teeth and shake their fists in response before continuing? Regardless, I thought this was a defensive system in response to a threat by rogue states with limited missile systems, but if this was in fact put in place to counter the grave and growing threat of soviet (er russian) domination of western europe, then why didn't Bush advertise it as such when he announced the PLAN (never implemented) during his presidency. Bush, however, went out of his way to assure the russians that the defense system wasn't mean for them but was meant for rogue states like Iran and NK. One wonders why Bush felt the need to lie about the reasons for the missile system...perhaps he didn't want to anger the Russians? But that's not what a president is for...

Poster boy,

Obama himself in an interview with Bill O'Reilly promised in his own words not to do what he decided to do. So this one is on him.

No, he didn't. Here is the transcript from the interview. He said he was in favor of it if it worked, and it has been determined as indicated above that it is not the most effective means of defense.

huh?

O'REILLY: OK. The United States and Poland putting a missile shield in Poland, all right? Putin doesn't like it.

OBAMA: Right.

O'REILLY: Are you going to keep that missile shield in there?

OBAMA: I think that we have to make sure that — I've said this before. The Russians are playing a game when they pretend that this missile shield is directed against all their ICBMs.

O'REILLY: Yes, it's ridiculous. It's a defensive thing.

OBAMA: It's a defensive thing. And we…

O'REILLY: So you're going to keep it there, then?

OBAMA: And given what has happened in Georgia, I think that we have to send a clear signal that Poland and other countries in that region are not going to be subject to intimidation and aggression.

O'REILLY: OK, now I just want to get this on the record. You're elected president, you're keeping the missile shield in Poland.

OBAMA: I believe that the missile shield is appropriate. I want to make sure it works though. I want to make sure it works.

"Bob,"
Where is the "promised in his own words not to do what he decided to do" part? Because I don't see it. Saying "I believe the missle shield is appropriate" a year ago doesn't translate into "I promise in my own words not to evaluate it's appropriateness to the threat and make a decision that another plan would be more effective." Especially when followed by the sentence "I want to make sure it works, though." Because people who do this stuff for a living are keeping the entire picture in mind.

Where's the promise? I see an incomplete sentence leading to a new line of commentary regarding an observation on the Russians, but not even anything on keeping or not keeping the missle defense system.

Bob,
I just want to add to what Stay Cool is saying. Obama is not breaking any promises about his plans or intentions because...once again, altogether now, on a count of three...HE IS NOT REMOVING THE MISSILE DEFENSE PROGRAM FROM EASTERN EUROPE! Please refer to the post earlier in this very same thread that points it all out in detail. In fact, obama is replacing bush's wasteful system with one that will actually be implemented earlier, be more effective, and will get the job done, as opposed to Bush's pipe dream that was basically flushing money down the toilet and not protecting anyone.

From the transcript:
O'REILLY: OK, now I just want to get this on the record. You're elected president, you're keeping the missile shield in Poland.

OBAMA: I believe that the missile shield is appropriate. I want to make sure it works though. I want to make sure it works.

Obama is doing just this. He's putting in a system that will actually work.

All I see is just how politicians talk. Everyone gets suckered into believing the politician said one thing when in fact no actual commitments were made. A claim can be made that Obama promised to keep the plans in place, but there are no words in the transcript supporting that.

"I want to make sure it works though."

Yes, I should clarify my last remark. He doesn't make any promises about keeping the *specific* missile defense shield system that was suggested under the Bush administration. He is not now abandoning a missile defense system altogether.

Obama is more slippery than most as I saw the interview and he was nodding his head yes so I also took it that he was going to abide by the US obligations but then again at some point in the future he will come up with some slight of hand or wink and a nod and say he did not lie! Oops! I used the lie word so must be a racist.
