Recently we added a new member to our family, the sweetest tri colored beagle. Now we want to take a vacation and we are worried about where to keep her as we don't have family that can handle the job. My husband investigated and we came across Club K-9 in Castro Valley. I wanted to be sure that they weren't just caging the animals and walking them periodically... so we went to visit them yesterday. The owners were there and were the ones to show us around, give us a tour as well as giving us an extensive background on themselves. The place was very welcoming and more like a vacation spot for dogs. On the hillside with lots of trees and a breeze, there were fenced in areas where the dogs socialize and get to run around and play. All of our questions were answered and we left our "Ipo" to sample a couple of hours as a trial period. We came back and even though she wasn't jumping for joy (she seemed the shiest out of the bunch) we will be leaving her in their hands. We are marking it up to her never being without us, so I am sure she just needs to adjust, like any young pup :) Does anyone else have other recommendations?

When my families house was tented for termites, we took our pitbull to a dog kennel off 680 south, somewhere near the golf course. I didn't go, but from what I heard from other family members, they were very pleased with how our dog was treated. The kennels were indoor/outdoor, so the dog could go outside if she pleased. As for walks and/or play time, I think that is an option but it might cost an extra few dollars (don't quote me though). Maybe somebody else on here will know the name of the kennel I'm talking about; it's right after the Sunol/84 exit but way before the first Mission exit in Fremont.

Happiness Country Kennels (I believe this is where PToWN94566 is speaking of) is who we have used for all our pets over the years. Very pleased with the service and care. There are many home sitters if you prefer that approach; we've also had success this way, but frankly, it's a family member in the business. Often these are people who work for local veterinarians.

My family has used Happiness Country Kennels for many years and have been very happy with their facilities, service and care. We also have friends who use them, as well. That being said, I have also heard very good things about Club K-9. A coworker drops her dog off at Club K-9 every day for day care and thinks very highly of them. I don't think that you could go wrong with either place!

We love Dublin Creek Kennel! They have air conditioned runs and heat in the winter. You can bring your pets bed and toys if you want. They are open on Saturdays until 1:00pm for drop off and pick up. A lot of Kennels are not....
We have used Happiness Kennel in the past but prefer Dublin Creek...

We have used Camp Bow Wow in Livermore off Vasco road for the past year. They were very meticulous about interviewing our dog and confirming that his social skilss were adequate for their environment. They are conveniently located if one is heading to Sac or the Sierra. The are pricey at $42/day, but have long stay discunts and offer a free bath if there is a 7 day or more stay. It is a very active place, with large dogs separated from smaller dogs, and a special place for old or tiny paws. The outdoor portion is a run and has no trees. Our dog evidently stays very active when he is there, because he returns a few pounds lighter and hoarse. A neat feature is that they have webcams that allow one to view one's dog during their hours of operation. They are part of a franchise operation, and a friend used the one in Santa Rosa with similar reactions.

I have been bringing my dog to Club K-9 since she was a puppy for the occassional Day Care. I have also boarded her there. What I like is they can run and play all day instead of being caged. The only complaint I have is that during the construction they have stacked the crates and it seems a little unsafe for the dogs. Otherwise I love this place.
Recently I have started using Woof in San Ramon for boarding. The staff is fantastic and the kennels are larger than most. The dogs play in the play-yard all day and are kenneled for a "nap" and then again at night. This is a very nice facility as well.
Both of these places are great for the younger, playful and full of energy dogs because they can play all day. Also, for a small fee have them give your dog a bath on the last day so you pick up a clean, tired and happy dog! Best $15 you will spend.

My kids have both earned some pocket money this summer by pet-sitting for neighbors that have gone on vacation. A lot of people are wary of kennels because of the various diseases floating about, plus some older dogs aren't exactly sociable and into the hobnobbing with other dogs that puppies seem to enjoy. Other dogs get very homesick and like their yards.
They walk the dogs, play with them, clean litter boxes, and make sure the food and water are fresh. It's a great way for them to learn responsibility, take care of pets, and make some money for those Great America/Six Flags trips.
You should ask around and find out if there are some pet-sitters around your area.

Thank you all so much for some great information. This town seems to be a dog town with great dogs and owners. I especially like the new downtown dog store Paws. What a great addition. We actually took our dog to walk Farmer's Market and she loved it, was well behaved so I was pleasantly surprised.

We love our dog, so traveling for a good kennel is not a problem. We take him to Happy Hound in Emerville. They do not have kennels. What they have is a huge warehouse with Little Dog Town, Med. Dog Town and Large Dog Town. ( all areas are divided ) The dogs play all day and at night they are put in their sleeping cabins. The part that i really love is that they have web cams, so everyday I can check up on him and know that everything is ok...we love this place.
