Auctions are almost done Schools & Kids, posted by Amy Taylor, a member of the Valley View Elementary School community, on Jul 31, 2009 at 12:04 pm
After tonight's group of auctions close, there will only be 2 more weeks. I predict we will have raised over $8,000 by 10pm tonight, and possibly close to $9,000. To some this looks like a big number, and yes it's pretty cool that a little old blog got this thing rolling. Others will be quick to point out that it's just a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of 2.8 million. I agree with both. It has been really neat to see so many people offer their services and products for this auction, for this cause (most donated on their own without even being asked). I have loved seeing the creativity people have come up with when they didn't have a traditional service to offer. I have gotten to see how generous and motivated some of the people in this town are.
On the flip-side, it has been hard to not get discouraged when I think about all the effort and time I have put into this (with the help of others too). It has literally become like a full-time job organizing this auction. And I have been glad to do it most of the time. But the truth of the matter is that the end results will not be enough.
So I hang on to the fact that this effort brought a lot of us together. I can sleep at night knowing I did everything I could to keep our schools the quality they once were. But I am still sad that we will be losing many of our great teachers.
I am still hoping for a miracle. That in these final days many who have been on the fence about donating, will. That the downtown carnival will bring in a ton of money and get people hopeful again.
It's not over 'til the fat lady sings!
If you want to check out the auctions, there is a group ending tonight, and I will be posting more listings in the next couple of days. Please click on the link below

Dear Amy,
I hope you will consider running the auction blog throughout this next school year. I truly believe with people back from summer vacations, the holiday season, and the knowledge that your blog is there, more people will come to your site and donate while receiving some terrific services and items. You have made it so easy for people to donate their services. Thanks for all your hard work! The site was such a generous and creative idea!

Candace~
If I considered running the auction through the school year, I think my husband would leave me, and my kids might start calling passing strangers "mom"!
I agree that the site would no doubt be more successful during the school year when everyone is "checked in", but the sole purpose of the auction was to make a difference for this upcoming year. All rehiring has to be done by August 18th (or thereabouts), so that is the deadline I am working with.
