Keeping Chickens in Pleasanton

Original post made by Bird Brain on Jul 28, 2009

I'm interested in getting some egg layers for our back yard. I know that we're not allowed to have any roosters (noisy at all hours). But, I'm wondering if there are any restrictions on keeping hens in Pleasanton.

Any advice from someone who is already keeping chickens? We are on a 1/3 acre lot with a redwood fence enclosing our entire back yard.

I believe a few years ago the city changed the ordinance to allow up to 4 hens. You should be able to call the city offices and verify this.

If Hosterman can have a hawk a few hens should be no problem. Considering the lack of consideration from some of my neighbors (using every street parking space, loud parties past midnight, etc, etc) I am thinking of getting roosters . . . . .

Our local 4H family has a few hens. There haven't been any problems. The basketball goals that block the sidewalks and parking spaces are a bigger issue than a few chicks.

The mayor has a wild bird in captivity so I see no reason why you can't own a few hens. After all, there are hens cackling all over this town! hahahahahahahaha...

Cholo I usually think your comments are sort of dumb and off target -- but you really got it right this time. Cackle, cackle, cackle.

The City's laws are available online: Web Link

and the rules specifically about chickens in residential neighborhoods:

Chapter 18.32 R-1 ONE-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL DISTRICTS

18.32.030 Permitted uses.

The following uses shall be permitted in the R-1 districts: ...

F. Household pets including up to six female chickens.

Heard that chicken guana is great grass fertilizer; and that some homeowners build chicken coops on wheels that they push around their grass to make it really green.

I am heartbroken. One of my chicks that I have given love to since they were 2 days old has turned out to be a rooster and can't stay with me and the other chicks. (It is illegal to have a rooster in Pleasanton) Sally (now Sal) is a beautiful light Brahma with white and black feathers almost 4 months old. He needs a safe and healthy home where he can live out a happy natural life. If anyone is interested in adopting a gorgeous regal rooster, please call me. You can come and visit....Thanks. Have you posted this info at the feed and grain stores? Surely someone can help out. On second thought -- if my neighbors take every parking spot on the street and have another loud outdoor party, including drinking games, til past midnight I will be coming to get that rooster . . . . . and a leaf blower and a jackhammer and a, well you get it. How about a little less entitlement and a little more common courtesy?
