Safeway Decides to Understaff at Night-Too Bad for You

Original post made by Lane on Jul 27, 2009

At around 9:30-10 pm if you feel like getting some ice cream, or want to do your weekly shopping at Safeway, be aware that the managers don't care if you have to wait 25 minutes to check out. Recently there was one, and last night two, cashiers. The lines were huge. One night last week there was just one cashier. I was watching my ice cream melt while I waited on an endless line. I left my cart with my friend and knocked on the manager's door. There's a big window, I could see him and he could've seen me but he refused to look up and acknowledge my presence. He never answered the door. When I went back to my cart I still had to wait fifteen more minutes to be checked out. Tonight there were two cashiers, and again, lines snaking down into aisles. Once again my ice cream melted while I waited to check out. You would think that Pleasanton, being the headquarters of Safeway, would have a model store, but you would be wrong.

Don't they close out registers at that time? I definitely avoid shopping at that time.

Your ice cream melts last week but you go again tonight and pick up ice cream, fully aware there are long lines, and your ice cream melts again. What does that tell you?

Hello!!!!!

Back in the old days grocery stores were closed at 9:30. We are lucky to have them open at all. But let's assume you don't want to wait. There are other options like the 7-11 and the liquor store across the street. I wonder if we just aren't spoiled consumers sometimes.

That Safeway limits it's staff too early in the evening. It's not that uncommon for people to still do a big grocery store run at 8:30 in the evening (especially in the summertime) and then try to check out around 9:00.

At 9:00, there is normally only one checker and it does cause serious problems with getting out of the store. I would think the number of customers trying to check out between 9:00-10:00 pm would warrant a few more cashiers for that hour.

oh, and don't expect to get milk that time of day either! Many times the case is completely empty!

If Safeway wants to be open 24 hours, then it should provide the appropriate staff for the number of customers coming in.

Stacey is a registered user.

I think Drexl is right. I was there once around that time and the checker told me they were closing out the registers for the day.

Ive was in there many times in the past 3 weeks about 8:45 and thwarted with long lines. The 3rd time I asked the checker, who was frustrated but pleasant, she replied something to the effect that the Managers are bonused on payroll hours and send people home to earn their target income. We wait, cashiers work harder and managers collect....
