Obama ran on an "end the *Iraq* war" platform, and made no secret of his belief in the need to step up efforts in Afghanistan. As for "among other promises," some he has fulfilled (Guantanamo) and others he is still working on.

Don't be so dizzy from spinning but learn your facts. Guantanamo has not changed other than some nice speeches and few countries have been willing to take anyone and the reason you do not hear Obama saying anything about Gitmo is that he has no idea what to do and is actually rethinking if anything should be done. Keep the clock ticking on this one and I bet come January 1st. Gitmo is still ticking. Iraq is still a powder keg but is not being covered in the news at all. Remember those body counts CNN was running when Bush was President which stopped when Obama was elected? Well guess what? our young men and women are still dying and as in the case of Afganistan we have now lost more troops in the last 5 months than the previous year or more. He will not end the Iraq war no matter what he calls our troops and the beat will just go on. He is in over his head and I believe he and his base realize it.

Jon, I know my facts, thanks. Obama signed three executive orders for the closure of Guantanamo by a year from last January, (more than just nice speeches), and they are working on the process - it is just six months so far.
He has also set up a withdrawal timetable for Iraq, in line with the advice of military personnel:

Here are some facts and the facts are that our young are getting killed for no reason and our President needs to get them out of harms way or define and sell the mission as it is very unclear what the mission is in Afghanistan.

I think that Bush said that the invasion of Iraq was about WMD's and spreading FREEDOM and Values. Americans knew that many innocent people would be killed on both sides. How come people want to end the war now? In my opinion, most Americans don't care if soldiers are killed. I also believe that there are corporations that will profit if the war continues.
That's life, people get lied to a manipulated all the time. Others make a profit off the deaths of soldiers. What's new?

obama ... obama ... obama ... yeah! That's the source to all the problems. What if your children came home and said I got a D because my teacher hates me ... you'd send that child to bed without dinner. Now, send yourselves to a new school of thought by understanding the boogieman obama is not the problem ... we got here by a long term mutual effort of materialistic consumption without looking at the long term downside risks. Hey watch out ... it's going to rain ... it must be obama's fault.

News Flash! Robert Gates just announced that he will increase the level of troops by 22,000 in the army in part required by the level of violence we are experiencing in Afghanistan and by most accounts is developing into a standoff.

Yes, resources that were taken away from Afghanistan to direct toward Iraq have placed the success initially achieved in overthrowing the Taliban in Afghanistan in jeopardy; thus the need to redirect and increase troops to this difficult arena by 22,000.

It is a terrible waste of young american lives and for no reason. Afghanistan will never be conquered by a foreign army and you can never defeat the Taliban as they will just disappear and then reappear as soon as we move on. Another vietnam

Well...the war is one way to spread "FREEDOM" and "American Values". Wars have nothing to do with whining about who lives and who dies. War is all about killing, killing, and more killing. How come you find this so upsetting? You supported Bush and the invasion of Iraq. Now that Americans are being killed, you don't think war is cool? Don't you think you're a bit late with your whining? Crawl back under your rock TROLL.

Finally, truth emerges. Everyone loves to blame W for the 'failures' or difficulties in Iraq. O thought he could get by by shifting to a 'easier' task in Afghanistan. Well, more of our boys are dying everyday. No one wants to update on the cross count in Lafayette. How interesting. I guess we don't want to honor our brave soldiers who have died for our country under 'O' administration. Where is the equality in news coverage? 4 soldiers killed by roadside bombs. Where is the discussion on getting the right equipment (armor reinforced humvees? and others) for our brave soldiers in Afghan? News reporters, get your head out of the sand and start reporting like a reporter! America wake up!

I have been following the Afghanistan war a bit and it seems as if it is getting out of control and we are finding the shoveling rough to say the least with few successes. I think there is a reason why it was the Russian bears greatest defeat. Can you imagine the outcry if Bush were president and Afghanistan was going like it is and the retention rates of our military were as low then as they are now? In short order people will start seeing it for what it is and that is just simple waste.

Gee, SteveP has it all figured out for us already. I'm going to just stop following the news, because the media is just a big government conspiracy, and he has told us just what is going to happen anyway. Maybe *he* is actually the messiah.

Pleasanton is much more Republican than most Bay area and East Bay Cities and it shows on these forums and around town.
Republicans, Conservatives, Christian Conservatives, all back HUGE Military and HUGE spending on Military, and flexing the military muscle! They NEVER complain about MILITARY spending, so what's the problem P-Towners. besides these foreign casualties are expendable as that are not saved Christan,s so they are going to hell anyways, the entire middle east. So, really we are "just doing Gods work, eradication the devil worshippers. Right??
Look, when the economy was good and the war was in full swing, everyone was fat and happy!

We have no business being in either Iraq nor Afghanistan and we need to leave while we can without more of our poor young people getting wounded or killed. This is so very sad and without purpose and in the end there will be no end.

"Unemployed: Thanks for reiterating to these posters the fact that the state run media ignores any real or perceived shortcomings under the messiah's watch."
Who needs " state run media or anything else"? You Conservative Folks do a FINE job blasting what you feel is the real news, allover gods green earth, without the help of the media. And you do a fine job of providing arrogant, mean spirited, fanatic, pot shot style, meaningless garble that make you all look like rain forest tribal warriors while your at it. You are the ones making your side look foolish and mentally unstable! That's why you are OUT of OFFICE!

Democrats committing suicide? Are they starting to realize that their "rock star" President has a lot more resemblance to Hitler and Putin than to the "Annointed One"? Are Nancy Pelsi and Harry Reid by any chance considering hari kari?

Look, we Libs had to endure 8 years of a president and cabinet that went against the very grain of our fundamental beliefs and values.
The Country was run into the ground and our national standings deteriorated beyond belief. We went from a surplus to an enormous deficit. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in the name of God and the efforts did nothing for anyone.
Now you all need to endure a minimum 3.5 of a president and cabinet that goes against the grain of your belief system and values.
This is AMERICA and we have a democratic government system. The people voted in Barack Husein Obama, like it or not.
Now you can be furious and miserable and get more and more angry, you can try to impeach or start a civil war, but your getting nowhere!
Here's the difference between the liberals and conservatives. We Liberal are open minded, we listen to others views and respect the freedom that everyone has to believe, do and be who and how they want.
You conservatives insist on forcing your ideals, values and beliefs on everyone, no matter what, because you believe your superior humans.
You have lost and are loosing your base and depending on those in the middle, who all but have abandoned your team. The more you display this hostility and hatred, the more you are alienating any hope for your parties future.
You Just Dint get It!
Be blessed that you live in a community, where the majority is like minded to your beliefs and that is glaring in and around town as it is in these forums.
be miserable, it's your right and your choice!
Remember the economy is in terrible condition and many are loosing their jobs and homes. When we were all living large, with no end in sight, nobody brought up any of these issues an any mass scale.
Everything sucks because a Black Liberal man was elected! Polls show that most conservatives are turning over in their grave, over a black man being elected, much less a Liberal. Read the trillions of racist comments across the Internet!
You breed Hate, hostility, anger, rebellion, hypocrisy, prejudice, intolerance, fear, and you claim to be Christian Conservaives who's values are based upon the Bible, the costitution and the founding fathers?

so I suspected all along you are a closet racist and just try to paint others in your own image. You are the only one on these blogs who consistently brings up race, black, anger, intolerance, prejudice and the like comments. You need to get yourself into a program or keep your race hated to yourself. I hope no one ever responds to your hate again.

Pati - well said.
Did anyone catch the exchange between Barbara Boxer and the President of the Black Chamber of Commerce in a Senate hearing on health care. He absolutely nailed her for bringing race into the issue and told here in stong term she was being a racist for doing so. She was shaken - it was simply awesome.

Don/Cholo-It's very difficult to take your rants seriously when you can't complete a sentence, let alone spell correctly. It's like debating a public grammar school child. Get out of my sandbox and take your kitty litter with you.
