The Remaking of our Curbs - at what cost?
Around Town, posted by Very Concerned, a resident of the Another Pleasanton neighborhood neighborhood, on Jun 24, 2009 at 9:01 am

Will the PW please find out the cost of the major rework of sidewalks? For example, the extensive use of heavy machinery at the intersection of Mohr & Greenwood must be adding to the base cost of adding curb grading and truncated domes (the yellow mats mandated by the ADA law designed to assist sight impaired people for any sidewalks built AFTER July, 2001). While agree the curbs should be modified, as a city, we should first focus on modifying all curbs built after the required-by-federal-law date. All other non-mandated curbs should be reworked after we get out of this recession.

Readers researched on another thread that the cost of each truncated dome - not including rework of the curb and labor cost- was somewhere in the neighborhood of $17-$30 per dome.

Bottom line: We need to know what the budget was for the project and we need a revised estimate of the cost to complete the project.

"Uncommon" sense dictates that this be the course of action going forward, otherwise, I fear we find ourselves in the situation we're now confronted with, the cost of what began as a simple project spiraling out of control. Sound familiar?

If I read the article correctly in the paper, the cutting of curbs is mandated by the US government , to be in compliance with the disabilities act. There is a time frame for the city to be in comliance. What I want to know is why they skipped some of the curbs? In my area they did some curbs on Touruga and left some un done. Can see no rhyme or reason to this.
