Only One Way To Revitalize Downtown Pleasanton

The only way to revitalize the downtown is to build high density housing downtown. Three or even four story condiminiums with underground parking and storefronts on the first floor.

This would provide the most important factor to any succssfull downtown: PEOPLE. Once a larger population is established downtown, they will be clamouring for services and the businesses would thrive.

The council's current plan is weak and lacks vision.

Wrong Rick! We have people in downtown but they only spend money on botox and manicures. Pleasanton seems to be the home of too many people who only consider the way they look. Why do you think there are so many lipo/botox/mani places downtown? Soccer moms in SUVs yacking on their cell phones . . . . .

It seems like there is already a lot of housing downtown. And, didn't some new condo type dwellings recently go up on Peters by Barone's? I think downtown needs more variety and a better economy! Why did stores like Domus, G.R. Doodlebug, and the "paint your own art" type store close/leave?

I don't necessarily think having 3/4 story condominiums in downtown Pleasanton would be a smart move towards revitalization. As others have said, there aren't enough stores that cater to enough people. We have the restruants and a few other stores, but other than that it's boring to walk in downtown. It seems like many of the buildings with two or more stories have offices that are not geared towards shopping.

Julie, I think the owners of Domus moved back to Hawaii, Doodlebug, as far as I know, went out of business, and I have no clue about the paint your own art store.

However, I do think our downtown does a lot better than other downtown's I've been too. I've seen some that are a complete dump,and have old, rotten wood on the front of buildings and have stores that seem useless to a town.

for PToWN94566: The owners of Domus closed for lack of sales, the owners of the Hawaiian store moved to Hawaii, Doodlebug closed this store but has two others open in Danville that are doing well and the paint your own art store closed due to lack of business and high rent.

That reminds me - was there some sort of rent issue with Domus as well?

I would love to always shop downtown, but it's a vicious cycle - if the rents are ridiculously high, then the prices will follow. I can't always afford downtown prices. I am more willing if the product is unique, but even then I sometimes have to compromise for price.

I love P-Town Downtown and have lived here for 21 years. But Im sad to say when I want to really do some serious shopping, I go to Walnut Creek for the afternoon or day. Pleasanton probably has to face up to needing some higher-density and upscale shopping and restaurants to really get the sales traffic. Id like to stay quaint, but reality is that most small business owners cant afford the not-to-code building expenses and hugh city business fees are going to discourage businesses from Pleasanton. Plus businesses have to go through a long permit process. Look at all the new businesses in the surrounding communities and I have to ask, why not here?

PLENTY of people come to downtown Pleasanton, because it IT is a "downtown" and is PLEASANT!

Dublin and San Ramon have no quaint "downtown" as you know.

The ECONOMY is whats killing downtown, NOT lack of .....

This is the same problem Jack London Square had for years and still does. People go there for the concerts and fairs. The people don't shop at the local stores. Restaurants are the only things that do well. Problem with downtown is having to walk so far to shop. Bank, bank, store, restaurant,real estate, bank, art store. Studio 7 is the heart of downtown. They should be on the front page everyday. A family business, dedicated and very successful. I love going in there just to look at the great art.

Studio 7 is the heart of downtown???? Very successful??? Say what??? Have you read the other thread about how they are closing half of their store? Check out the comments from people who have had to deal with that mother/daughter dragon team.
You are right in your assessment of too many banks and not enough convenient parking. Walnut Creek and Los Gatos have shopping, Pleasanton has banks and botox.

Wow! You are right about Studio 7. I began asking my friends about your comments and boy did my hair sizzle when I got their feedback. I guess I never bothered to scratch farther than the surface on this one.

Everyone is making some valid points, but the times are difficult right now. How do we keep downtown Ptown viable? We have the best Farmer's Market around. I don't think it's fair to compare Pleasanton to Jack London Square, a tourist attraction that has historically attracted typical souvenier shops and lost the last of its "old town" character when Clancy's closed. Walnut Creek has created a major downtown center by attracting a lot of big-name chain anchor stores to support the smaller businesses, but do we really want all that traffic? Danville has done a little better job of keeping the small-town feel, but has a few empty spaces and separate little (almnost) strip malls so it's not so easy to walk around and shop there anymore. Los Gatos has probably done the best job of keeping small, but even they have a lot of turnover in the small businesses. Variety? Lower fees to attract businesses?
