Hayashi wants part of I-580 named for slain Oakland officer

A resolution was introduced in the California State Assembly Wednesday to designate a portion of Interstate Highway 580 in unincorporated Alameda County as the Sgt. Daniel Sakai Memorial Highway in honor of the Oakland police officer who was slain in March.

While I'm sure that all the people that have roads and things named after them deserve them - is this really what we need to be spending time and money on right now in California?

I don't know how much time it takes, nor the costs associated with it (or even where that money comes from), but in a time when the state is bankrupt, budgets are slashed is this the a wise spending of money.

Secondly, even if times were good, shouldn't we take the money spent on naming things and do something good - like college scholarships in these peoples names? Or victims family funds or something other than road signs?
