The last two times I voted, including today, a poll worker stood watching as I put my voting card into the slot in the machine (when I was done filling out the card). Unless I hold the envelope over the card very carefully, the poll worker can see how I voted as the card slips into the machine. There is no privacy. Should the poll worker be standing there watching the card be put into the machine?

Please tell the Alameda County Registrar of Voters about your experience. Elections are supposed to be secret ballots and the poll worker should have respected that.
If you are not comfortable contacting the Registrar, post your polling location on this blog and the time you voted.
Before KGM or any others try to turn this discussion into a debate on G, this is not about how the person voted, just her right to have her vote be private.

Okay...I'll chill also. Thought you were being "rude" so that's why I said that. I just tried to put out some info and me and kristine were clarifying and I felt like you jumped on me for it. It doesn't matter how you or I voted, we're on the same team now! I, as I am sure you do, just want to know the results.
Regardless of how we all voted, we're all neighbors...so let's all be nice! :)

Maybe the poll worker was just checking to make sure you were putting the ballot in in the right direction so that it was read properly. I noticed the same thing today, and I figured that was why. The poll worker can't do anything once your ballot is cast, anyway.

It is interesting to see the Piedmont results- a $2,082 parcel tax plus an emergency tax of $249. This is a tax that has been renewed every four years since 1985. They are experiencing the same budget issues that all districts around the state are facing, their teachers are paid on a step and column schedule, and yet it is not a question as the polls are showing so far.

Frank, here is a link. I don't thing the $2082 is a flat fee in Piedmont according to this news report. It has more to do with parcel size and dwelling type.

I think "by square footage" is legal, but "by dwelling type" seems quasi-legal. The law requires any special tax like this to be uniform.
Incidentally, PUSD could have structured Measure G "by square footage", thus restoring some of the subsidy to homeowners by business properties that existed prior to Prop 13.

Don't we also have an existing bond measure for the school district relative to the purchase price of a home post 1997? Then we would be commesurate with Piedmont and our 233 is comparable to thier 249

This is some of the information I was reading about Piedmonts tax-
Measure B would renew an existing parcel tax that levies about $2,082 per year per average parcel, for another four years. If that is approved, it will take effect beginning in 2010-11. The tax could increase 5 percent per year, to be determined by the school board.
Measure E is a new "emergency" tax that would levy an additional $249 per average parcel per year. It is a flat tax that would remain the same throughout its three-year term.

It is really neither here nor there at this point. PUSD could've structured things in the measure differently in a lot of respects, but they didn't. We'll now see if they have to in the future or if the majority want what they gave us this time...

You can put the ballot in the machine upside down. I noticed this last time I voted (that the poll workers were scanning the ballots) and asked before I even voted how to 'feed' the machine so they knew I didn't need help or their curious eyes. It's not about what they can do but the constitution.

i had the same complaint about the workers being able to see how you voted as the card is put into the scanner but today the worker told me to turn it upside down. Wish I'd thought of that before!

I was very upset that the poll workers saw my vote today and last month. No suggestions to turn the ballot upside down were given either time. What's the purpose of a secret ballot when it isn't in the least?
