Mom of 4
I did request and receive copies of the superintendent's expense reports for the period beginning 7/1/08 and ending, well, I'm not sure when it ended...I asked for copies of expense reports to date, but the last expense report filed for which I was given copies was dated 2/13/09, the first 7/2/08.
For the period covering these 8 months, $550.05 was charged back to PUSD for "working lunches," including lunches with PUSD paid for consultants.
I have requested copies of the expense reports filed by the superitendent dating back to 2002 as well as expense reports filed by assistant superintendents.
While approximately $60 a month in "working lunches" is not a huge amount, I can certainly agree that every penny counts, particularly as we reach the end of the school year and teachers are running short on copy paper and other school supplies and find themselves digging into their own pockets to purchase these items. (also, I do not yet know if other PUSD employees are charging back meals to PUSD)
I have emailed the PUSD Business Director and suggested that in light of the budget crisis PUSD is experiencing, "working lunches" paid for by the taxpayers should be discontinued.
I have prepared a list detailing lunch dates, locations, amounts, individuals present and notations regarding the purpose of the working lunch. If you would like to see the list, please email me directly at Ann0819@aol.com.
Copies of the actual expense reports are available through Business Services at PUSD.

I do not think we want to tie the hands of the PUSD by forcing them to use supplier X or business Y. I think what we should do is encourage them to be able to quote multiple businesses and select the one that offers the most value (not necessarily the cheapest). Forcing the PUSD to use only local businesses may create another problem of local business taking advantage of the school district because they know they have to use a local business. Obviously, that is not what we want.

No argument with what you said - just would like to see PUSD make an effort to use local businesses when it can. I do think they obtain 3 bids for certain types of work, or over certain estimated costs.
I wouldn't want to force PUSD to only use Pleasanton businesses - just encourage them to consider doing so when it's possible.
