Boched at Baci

Original post made by jackals, Vintage Hills Elementary School, on Oct 28, 2008

Went to Baci for dinner and had yet another bad meal. The meal was very bland, barely warm. Also my companion's dinner was cold (ravioli and prawns) and the prawns were partially raw.

Been there 3 times in a year or so, only once was my meal acceptable.

There were 4 window tables avail when we got there. The would not sit us their due to reservations. Even though we stayed over an hour there were still two window tables avail when we left.

Bad service, bad food, bad ecomony, all bad for Baci. Hope they shape up.

All complaining here will do is hurt the opportunity to "get it right". Calling or writing a letter to the owner would be a far more direct method than putting this info on a public forum unless you are trying to build consensus? Personally, if I had 3 out or 4 bad experiences I simply wouldn't go back. If they are consistantly as bad as your experience it would be amazing that they remain open.

At 33%, your success at Baci's is better than mine. I have never had a good meal there. The last time I was there, the waiter talked me into changing my order from salmon to some other horrific fish dish. One of the few times I have actually left a large portion of food uneaten and I have never and will never go back. There are too many other acceptable restaurants on Main Street (not good, just acceptable). The whole Main Street restaurant scene seem to be past it's prime. Are there any restaurants on Main street that you can honestly rave about?

There are no restaurants on Main Street in Pleasanton that I can recommend to visitors. I usually take them to Berkeley...or the City!!!

Dear jackals,

I can appreciate your story. Personally, my wife and I ate there shortly after they first opened for business, and we have never gone back since. Terrible service, terrible food, terrible everything. Absolutely one of the worst restaurants we've ever had the displeasure of visiting.

The restaurant owner could have cared less when we asked for him to complain about the horrible food and service (he was packing 'em in at the time, since it was a brand new place).

Can't wait for this place to close up shop. They're awful, and it deserves to go out of business. Sad part is, the owner is opening up a new restaurant down the street, in the old Coffee Beans and Bistro spot (if I remember correctly), and I think he either owns or has part-ownership in that restaurant on Hopyard, which I understand is just as bad.

Baci = absolutely terrible restaurant on all counts. Avoid at all costs!

Regarding some of the other posts, Pasta's and Strizzi's are consistently good places to eat on Main Street, based on personal experience/having eaten at both establishments many, many times.

Consistently good food, and good service (sometimes great on both counts).

Another place to avoid, btw, is Scott Adam's place, Stacey's Cafe. They once ran out of lettuce (!) when we ate there, and then didn't even apologize for the ludicrous inconvenience (i.e., can't sell you a salad, sorry). A sharp restauranteer would have simply run down to Raley's and bought some lettuce to avoid that kind of embarrassment. Needless to say, we haven't been back there, either. Scott Adams may be a great comic strip writer (Dilbert), but he and his supposed experience partner run an over-priced, truly run-of-the-mill establishment that also isn't worth anyone's while (or money).

Hope that helps folks looking for someplace to eat downtown where you can get some value for your dining dollar!

Que Triste'

Baci is very expensive and below average.

The best value on Main Street?

Drum roll please....................................................Strizzi.

Kind of loud but the food and service is good and you won't walk out wearing a barrel.

I went there once for lunch and never went back. I had a chicken Caesar salad, and I am serious when I say this, McDonald's salad is better. At Baci the chicken in the salad was completely dried out. It was so bad. I never went back.

I second the recommendation for Oasis -- have been there four times (sorry, we don't eat out on a weekly basis... just frugal and/or I don't mind spending some time after work cooking a nice meal at home for family or guests), and every time we've been there, we've had very attentive service and the food has been very tasty and well-presented. Also, the newer waiting area/lounge is a good place to sit and relax, either before a dinner or if you just want to have a glass of wine or hang out and talk.

We have tried almost every restaurant on Main Street, at least once. The only one that consistently gets our business now is Oasis. We go there for special occasions, last minute dining and on a regular basis to share a bottle of wine and munchies in the wine bar. Last time there I asked if a particular thing was available in the bar, was told it was not, and said that was a shame I had really wanted it. The owner sent a complimentary serving of it to our table. Why anyone would go to a bad place more than once, perhaps twice, is a mystery to me.

Sorry you have had a bad experience at BACI. We recently went to Baci and had a wonderful meal--Halilbut, pasta, and salad. If you don't like it, don't go back--but there is no reason to publicly announce your displeasure . There are plenty of great restaurants in Pleasanton, the nice thing is you have a choice. It sounds like you are a bit grumpy. Maybe if your company was more interesting, you wouldn't have worried about where you were sitting even an hour after you were seated. Try relaxing and enjoying life, it is too short to be so grumpy.

I'm glad to hear such good reviews for Oasis. I haven't been there in awhile. When I was last there, the service was indeed excellent and there was a belly dancer! The food was OK but I probably didn't order their speciality and that was my fault. I will go back and try them again!

Dear Anon, You are the negative person. "Jackals" started a thread to share his opinion of a restaurant in our community, and 'restaurants' is one of the topics on this forum, by the way. She or he was interested in other people's experience. Nothing wrong with that, in fact, that's the purpose of this forum. You turn it into a critical rant on his character, criticize him for writing at all, and try to shame him. You are the negative one.

I used to go to the Baci that was on Hopyard (I think it's the same owner as the one downtown). Once they brought my chicken out and it was completely raw in the middle. They screwed up my order on another occasion. I'd never eat there again.

When Baci opened a few years ago, the food and service were very good. I ate there a few times (not often because I didn't see the value for my $$) but I particularly enjoyed the selection of breads and fruity water. And the unique variety of soups always came to the table very hot. Anyway, the original owner knew something about opening and then shortly thereafter "flipping" the business to someone and making significant profit on his investment. He did it several times right here on Main Street (think Silver Palate--now closed), and who knows where else.

For my money, I like Pastas Trattoria and Fontina Ristorante, both excellent for either lunch or dinner. Strizzi's is also very good, but the acoustics are a turn off. And, to experience something from a different part of the Mediterranean, you must try the tapas and pallella at Casa Madrid. Bon Apetit!

How has Baci been around if it has been so poor so many times by those described above? Is it simply that folks who have had a good experience aren't commenting? If it was a consistently bad as is described above, I could'nt imagine how they could survive, especially in _this_ economy!

Oasis on the other hand has gotten nothing but positive response. Can't wait to try it out now!

My husbanc and I at a t Baci's on Halloween night and had a delightful dinner, food was tasty and great service. The only thing that I found was the bread din't have a lot of flavor. The crab raviolis were perfect.

I had a "less than great" experience at Oasis. A small group and I went there for lunch recently. The service was so slow! It was 1 hour before we got our food. No real apologies, no free drinks or free dessert, just "sorry we had a big group today." I can't put 1-1/2 hours aside for a quick lunch!

I have been getting the kabobs and the food is too meat centric for me.

We used to go to Baci's regularly, but the last two times the food was clearly below par. My wife's potatoes were closer to library paste and my beef tasted like it had been a leftover from the previous day and reheated.

My favorite restaurant on Main is Stacy's. The food is great, the service is good and I like sitting on the patio in front and watching my neighbors go by.

Now that Baci Owner has opened the Main Street cafe, across from Tully's, what do you all think of the food their?
