A new Starbucks coffee shop with drive-through service is now planned for a vacant site next to Safeway's recently opened Lifestyle supermarket along with a gas station where construction is already under way after being approved by the Pleasanton Planning Commission.

Do I understand correctly that the GAS station contruction will not start until the Starbucks is approved?

I wonder if Walmart would get a 5-0 vote if they wanted to build a gas station in Pleasanton? Whatever Safeway wants, Safeway gets.

Oldtimer,

You are pretty much right on target with that one. However, that may be just a subset of "whatever the unions want, the unions get". Safeway's labor force is union, Wal-mart's is not". Unions own the Pleasanton City Council.

We are thrilled to have the new gas station going in at Safeway but my son just told me that they discontinued the 3 cent discount in August. Hopefully they'll still be cheaper than the Shell (?) station on Bernal and Valley.

Does anybody know any truth to the rumor that Safeway will NOT be honoring (or offering) their gas discounts through the Safeway cards at this or other gas stations?

Here's a link to the discount Web Link

What stores are going in at the new Safeway shopping center seems to change with whoever is lobbying ($$$$$) the City Council. Whatever happened to the McDonalds that was going in where they are now going to put in the Safeway Gas and Starbucks? I'm guessing that a bunch of left wingnuts nixed the McDonalds. After all it's more politically correct to consume 800 calorie sugar-and-fat-laden Starbuck concoctions and healthy snacks like candy bars than it is to eat at McDonalds.

The City Council makes out again on the Safeway Gas. Originally Danville Oil (the old Shell station) had lobbied ($$$$$) them to get an exclusive deal on gasoline sales in that area. Now that it is a Chevron, the exluclusivity must have gone out the window, so the Council was open to more lobbying ($$$$$) from Safeway.

Isn't it amazing how left wingnuts, unions, and lobbying ($$$$$) make things happen with the City Council?

I'm wondering how the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce weighs in on this one as their PAC is a big supporter of the Council's two left-wingnuts-in-chief, Hosterman and Cook-Callio.

And never mind that there is already a Starbucks inside the Safeway.

And there is a Starbucks right across the street as well......

Was there ever any doubt this would be approved?

Safeway gets whatever it wants in this town.

Went in to the new store, with camera in hand, to see how 'clean' it was. The trays in the meat counter are disgusting! Took a few pictures and went home and called the health dept. They will be getting an inspection before the week is over!!!

It's a shame that they can't keep things sanitary.

Looking forward to the option of another choice in a gas station very close to me, and the drive through Starbucks ~ Freedom of Choice is a good thing ~

The Starbucks will be located in the corner behind the gas station? Probably not the best place to put the Starbucks as it won't make it very easy to access when you have long lines at the gas pumps. Will they be adding another driveway along Bernal between the off-ramp and the current driveway to alleviate congestion??

If one fully reads the article, one will note that the existing Starbucks across the street will be closed once this new location is built and opened...

I am very pleased with the new project that went up on Bernal and Valley.. Safeway and all the nearby shops. It makes one of the Main Entrance to Pleasanton look inviting.. My Only concern is the New CVS. I hope it will be painted to look nice along with the surrounding buildings.. Instead of one big cement block. That would be terrible if they kept it looking the way it looks now. As far as the drive thru Starbucks that is an excellent idea for the commuters headed right to the freeway . And the Starbucks inside Safeway is for shoppers.. The one across the Street will be closed.. And to me that was the nicest store in that shopping area.. I have been here many years and they seem to struggle with keeping that shopping area alive.. Maybe they need to upgrade it and lower the rent for some of the new businesses they have struggled much to long.
