A new report out on Measure A shows that the half-cent sales tax is making a difference in Alameda County. Locally, the tax has benefited ValleyCare Health System and Axis Community Health, according to officials from both organizations.
ValleyCare has received $1.05 million from Measure A and the funds went toward the first phase of upgrading and enlarging the Pleasanton hospital's emergency room, according to Ken Mercer, vice president of the ValleyCare Foundation.

"The ER was built in 1991, is 4,000 square feet and meant to serve 13,500 patients. However, medical professionals are actually assisting more than double that number."
I have to wonder how many patients going to the ER are there because they don't have health insurance so they end up not getting the proper preventative care. And I'm not talking about illegal immigrants either. The article states 11% of county residents are uninsured. It would be nice to know the percentage of uninsured using the ER.
Would it be less expensive to buy into a universal health care system than to continue to spend taxpayer money on the uninsured? Going to the ER is more expensive than regular check-ups!

No, ValleyCare is not a for profit hospital. They are non-profit hospital. With the population growth in the Tri-Valley, and ValleyCare being the only emergency room in the Tri-Valley I'm happy my tax dollars are going to help them expand.
