I too heard the noise and we are close to the freeway @ Santa Rita and West Las Positas. I had thought it may have come from Camp Parks but it was sounding like it came from the South. I know nothing but I can confirm the sound and time.

Likely some early fireworks as gadstone said. In my neighgborhood, I always hear strange booms and bombs around the 4th every year.

I was told by police they got a report that bottle rockets were being shot off around 8:55 Sunday.
