Just last week I received email notification that I am officially in the "Be the Match" bone marrow registry. I sincerely hope that I am one day matched with someone like Janet. I registered in a bone marrow registry many years ago but have never been called in. Apparently, the probability of any one person being a good match is very low, which is why it is important to have as many people as possible register. In Janet's case, asian donors have a higher probability of being a good match, but everyone should consider registering.

If, by chance, you are matched up with someone in need, you will have a chance to increase your karma through a bone marrow donation (a minor procedure). Also, if you should ever unfortunately need a bone marrow donation for yourself, you will know of at least one person who not only is a perfect match, but who also owes you a favor.
