Name one for Livermore! Around Town, posted by BARTD naming New Stations, a resident of Livermore, on May 30, 2012 at 11:02 am
BARTD is seeking names for the new stations now being built in Fremont, and Milpitas, and other places that have NOT been paying taxes for generations, but now are getting service.
Why not name one of the shiny new stations: "Livermore"?
This would fulfill BARTDs original promise.
There could be a "Livermore" station in my lifetime- without forcing unwanted slums on a city, just to get the station they have paid for.
And it would be just as honest as they have always been: BARTD promised Livermore train service when they asked for the tax (which they have collected for over 40 years, and do not appear willing to return.) BARTD went to the government for more money to build, based on the total cost of the system, then never bothered to build that part.
Integrity, or just Gritty?:
And it is not clear that they ever intended to build it.
They tried to sell off the land that was to be the Livermore station, now a mostly unused park and ride lot. They did not object when the Lexus Lane was built in the "reserved" train right of way in the median of 580. And they have sold off the surface Dublin parking lot, so even if Livermore people want to ride "their" electric train, there will be no place to pay to park. (Just another lie? Originally parking was to be free!)
BARTD has a profit of over 30 million dollars this year. Some of that should be dedicated to fulfilling their broken promise to provide service to Livermore.

The Proposition that offers to tax Livemore even more, by raising our sales tax by yet another half cent, to over 10%, has a fatal flaw: It is permanent. I might have been interested if it had had a 5 year "sunset" like other taxes, so voters could see whether it was being used properly, or even if it was still needed.
Depending on how it is actually used, it might give even more money to BARTD supposedly toward a Livermore station (NOT both stations, just one) but it goes on forever, and it does NOT cancel the existing taxes we are already paying.

If BART sells/gives away all the land that would be needed to extend BART down the median of i580, then they would be forced to build a BART station in downtown Livermore, which is what board of directors at BART wanted all along.
Forget what Livermore wants, or Pleasanton, or Dublin, or the commuters want. BART by hook or crook is going to build a high density transit village in downtown Livermore come hell or high water. I guess you could call the station Berkeley South :-)
