The Government We Deserve by Cindy Cross
It is hard not to be cynical as you see the same problems that plague our society being dealt with in the same hapless manner. But who has created this seemingly unbridgeable divide? We have.
It is interesting that every bill that comes to a vote before congress is divided by party, and not on the merits as to how it will or will not benefit Americans in general. Take for instance the legislation that is derisively called: Obama Care. Many Californians do not have medical coverage, although they have jobs and pay taxes the same as those insured by their employers, the state or federal government.
Although the bill did not meet the objectives of the socialist left-wing communists, and has been reviled as a fascist takeover by the ever encroaching government who wants to create death panels for granny by the fanatic right, it did win 60 votes and was signed into law by the president…only to be contested in the courts and used as a platform for those who want it repealed. In essence, our government is like a cancer eating itself instead of a dynamic body that actually improves the lives of those it represents. Nothing accomplished as usual.
Same with the debt ceiling debacle; the political body consuming itself by actually putting the economic welfare of the country on the line because of a small faction of the Republican Party holding the country hostage to its insane demands. This resulted in the unnecessary downgrading of our national credit rating.
Not only have we voted these do nothing politicians into office, we have kept the bar low in terms of the standards in which they serve us. It is also telling that the majority of our representatives are lawyers, former business executives and career politicians. Our best and brightest are nowhere to be found in public service, instead we have half-wits and half-term governors setting the bar.
The Fed chairman just recently stated that a big part of our economy being stuck is the result of our politicians not being able to act as responsible adults. Again, we voted these people into office and we have allowed ourselves to be put into a black or white, right or left, Hannity or Colmes view of our world – which it isn’t.
