Kids do the crazyist things

Original post made by tango, Vineyard Avenue, on Feb 26, 2011

With all the stories lately about young people doing crazy things, I thought that I would tell the story about my youngest son taking an inertube down the arroyo in Pleasanton. He started somewhere up stream near the moble home parks. It was winter and the water was high. One of his friends came to me and told me what my son was doing. I got in my car and went to the Main st. bridge by the Pleasanton Hotel, I got there in time to see him floating by. If I hadn't stopped him there I don't know how far he would have gone. He is also the kid that has had more broken bones than anyone else in the family. He is my risk taker child. Kids will be kids and we can only hope to guide them in the right direction and that they live through the teen and young adult years.

Over 20 years all of my sons have gone down the Arroyo during high water, it is an annual practice. I never knew at the time and do not condone it. I talked to my youngest son about the tragedy of the Los Lomas boys since I suspected they were planing a run last week.
We can council and love them but we can not lock them up or keep them in a bubble.....nor should we want to.

I didn't put this in the Town Square Forum just to give young people an idea if something risky to do. I brought it up because I wanted people to know that a risky "sport" exists in our town and and to try to keep their children safe. From what In have seen the arroyo is now chocked with trees and weeds. This will make it very unsafe.

They regularly spray pesticides down there as well. Bathing in pesticide-water doesn't sound too appealing.
The point of the articles in the news haven't been in the 'kids do the craziest things' vein, the point has been death and critical injuries.
