I have some exciting news to share, and I need your help!
I recently created a short video about Pleasanton. I enjoy taking pictures and videos as my hobby, and I thought it would be a fun project to share with both my 3rd graders who study Pleasanton, and also for my own children. I want them to remember and appreciate their childhoods and this wonderful place where we live.
Then I entered it in the Lonely Planet Video Contest. The competition was tough, but Lonely Planet chose my video as the best in the category “No Place Like Home.” I am still in the running, going against only four other finalists who are competing for the grand prize! However, at this point in the competition, registered YouTube voters are left to decide who the winner will be. I think it will be a tough one to win, but maybe if I get Fairlands and our fellow Pleasanton residents to help us, I might have a shot.
The prize package is worth about $10,000, so it’s a pretty big deal for me! So, please check it out. If you like it, and are willing to help me out, I would be honored! Please vote for my video everyday, and help spread the word to everyone and anyone you think might be interested.
It would mean a lot to me!

Once you are there, log on first! This is very important, because if you are not logged on, it will not count. The informational video will play first. Look over to the right side of it, and click on the big green button that says
“Vote for your favorite now!”
Then find my video on the side bar. Click on it. While the video is playing, you will see two buttons underneath.  Click on the green thumbs up! And that’s it!

I haven't watched the vid for the reason I that I don't understand the "...by Magrela Canela (That’s me, Nicole Dalesio)" part. Is it a Alan Smithee (if that's even right) director name, just didin't get it and I know people like posting weird stuff on here.

This is an incredible video for a family to watch, featuring children from Pleasanton, beautifully describing Pleasanton, made by a teacher in Pleasanton.
There is nothing weird about someone using a "user name" for an online account, just something weird about someone judging a "name".

GOOD LUCK - you've been posted to my fb account for votes.... I couldnt find the little hand at first "thumbs up" - it was down by the text comments.......... there were a lot of comments, but everyone forgot to click the hand to turn green thumbs up... luckily i clicked on them.. hopefully it saved! nice video by the way, well done! best to you and your family. Your video brought back great memories of my time growing up in Pleasanton. When I was in High School this is were I thought I was going to live but as I got older and could not afford Pleasanton I had to move away and nothing will ever feel like Pleasanton. I do visit the Farmers Market on Saturdays and that is such a treat for me and my family. Maybe one day I will be able to call Pleasanton home again. I voted for your video because you captured were I left my heart.

Perfect. Exactly how we feel about Pleasanton. We also have 2 children who grew up in Pleasanton and are now in college. Video is very creative. I loved it.

The one on Moab is really better but go P-Town!
Gretchen - I don't mind people using 'usernames' to protect their annonimity but it was odd to me to use a user name that's not registered and is a real name, then in the post give your real identity. So they weren't using their registered user name or protecting their identity, seemed odd. I think others would understand why it's strange, and if you check for example a Cholo vid link you would also understand why I was leary.

I'm overwhelmed by the level of support I am getting from the community. It's actually very encouraging! Thank you, and keep it up! It's working! Based on view count, it looks like I am still in second place, but there was a huge surge in views of my video in the last 24 hours, so that's really good. I also think the Pleasanton Weekly has made a difference.
Yes, if you clicked on the green thumb, that's good. Make sure you are logged in so it gets counted. There is no kind of confirmation, so I do agree that it's a little confusing.

Nicole,
While your video is technically interesting it seems to lack that "certain something". It doesn't *really* tell me anything compelling or unique about modern Pleasanton, other than the friendly people downtown and open parks to run and play at. This information you present on our town feels a little cliche - "friendly people", "lively downtown", "nice parks", etc.
I think the NYC piece is the most compelling. It's technically interesting and the story is focused on an aspect that we never associate with NYC - it's waterways and life upon it. Who knew we could sail through the Bronx, or that deer existed IN THE BRONX? The writing for the NYC piece is powerful and poetic. "...where the dissonance of the city combine with the more peaceful harmony of the water...This transforms into a rocky blend of yin and yang, where even the deer come out of the Bronx to enjoy the Summer rain." That's great writing!
Your piece is nice, but it feels too personal. It doesn't really teach me anything very compelling about our town.
Are you a Pleasanton native? How long have you lived here?

Thanks for your input! This is my hobby, and I love the opportunity to learn more. Yes, I can definitely see your point. On the other hand, my day job is to take care of my own children, and to teach 3rd grade. This is simply how I see my town. It is my perspective.
Also, I would have to say that the New York video IS excellent. Actually, all the videos are very well done. The interesting thing is, I emailed all the other contestants congratulating them on their success and I found the most friendly of them all was the New Yorker. He is very knowledgeable in video editing, and was happy to share some tips with me. I'm honored to have even gotten this far in the game,
This contest has much to do with the quality of the video, but at this point of the game, it is more of a challenge that involves teamwork in getting votes. My family, friends, school community, and the town of Pleasanton is my team. I'm grateful for their support!
I've been a resident of Pleasanton for 9 years now. I am a native of the Bay Area though, and I used to live in Brazil as well. I moved here mainly because of the excellent school system and I feel it is a great place to raise a family as it is very child-friendly. I'm proud to be a part of this community.

I applaud you in using these kinds of resources (community forums) to get votes. From a marketing perspective, you're getting it done! It shows in the numbers of views. Hopefully the number of legitimate votes for your video is comparable and you bring "home" your prize!
I agree that Pleasanton is a great little city. I was born and raised here and have spent about 30 of my 37 years here. I've watched this town grow from about 30k people to almost 70k. Talk about change! My mom still lives in the house I grew up in too. I've got soooo many awesome stories about secret places we used to go to as kids...All long gone now.
Anyway, I thought you might like to know that Milk is currently doing a video contest as well. You've probably seen that cheesy 'Milk is gold' commercial with the rocker drinking milk from his guitar...Anyway, check out milkquarious.com.
