Gym parking lots, hospitals are burglary hot spots
Comments on Stories, posted by Editor, Pleasanton Weekly Online, on Jan 17, 2008 at 3:34 pm

For the past four weeks, automotive burglaries in Pleasanton have been on the rise.

In December, police reported 67 thefts from autos and so far there have been 47 this month. Many of these crimes are committed in the parking lots of local gyms, the hospital and also along Santa Rita Road, West Las Positas Boulevard, Hacienda Drive and Main Street.

I agree that denying a potential thief valuables to go after is the best defense, but I'd also feel generally safer having security cameras covering parking lots and guards on the monitors ready for a quick response.

"Police are asking residents to be aware of people that look suspicious, anyone driving slowly through parking lots...If that behavior is seen, people should call police."

What does "look suspicious" mean? This sounds like a free pass to pick off just about anybody. Since when is driving slowly through a parking lot suspicious? Should we start speeding?

Suspicious is walking around looking in cars or lurking around parking lots slowly...police need to be notified obviously we have a serious issue if there have been 67 automotive burglaries in the past 2 months.

120 thefts in under two months and all the police and city council can do is tell us to hide things in our cars and report any suspicious behavior. I guess mayor hosterman has been too consumed with keeping her hawk to care much about public safety.

It seems that we need a mayor, city council, and police chief that care about Pleasanton.
