Swine Flu Campaign Waits on Vaccine
Only Third of Supply Is Expected for First Round of Vast Effort
By Rob Stein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, August 23, 2009

Government health officials are mobilizing to launch a massive swine flu vaccination campaign this fall that is unprecedented in its scope -- and in the potential for complications.

The campaign aims to vaccinate at least half the country's population within months. Although more people have been inoculated against diseases such as smallpox and polio over a period of years, the United States has never tried to immunize so many so quickly.
But even as scientists rush to test the vaccine to ensure it is safe and effective, the campaign is lagging. Officials say only about a third as much vaccine as they had been expecting by mid-October is likely to arrive by then, when a new wave of infections could be peaking.

Among the unknowns: how many shots people will need, what the correct dosage should be, and how to avoid confusing the public with an overlapping effort to combat the regular seasonal flu.
To prepare, more than 2,800 local health departments have begun recruiting pediatricians, obstetricians, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics and even dentists, along with a small army of volunteers from churches and other groups. They are devising strategies to reach children, teenagers, pregnant women and young and middle-aged adults in inner cities, suburban enclaves and the countryside.

"This is potentially the largest mass-vaccination program in human history," said Howard Markel, a professor of medical history at the University of Michigan who is advising the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as it spearheads the effort.

Local Nurse:
Do they know the long term complications if any for this vaccine? My 13yr old was just diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and I am nervous about him getting this shot.

Jackie,

I am NOT going to let my kids get this particular vaccination. The company already fouled up doses sent world wide and there is overwhelming evidence that this was NOT an accident. They combined LIVE virus in the vaccine.

Please do look at the entire article and research this. The vaccine is being pushed through the testing stage for mass usgae.

"Do they know the long term complications if any for this vaccine?"

Absolutely NOT as they are still testing. There is a theory that the company has released a contaminated version, that will create an outbreak and that will in turn make them a lot of money.

Trust me, I am not a conspiracy theory person, but this is a s close as I have seen to a conspiracy.

I read about the accidental release all over the world of the swine flu vaccine that contained the LIVE virus and caused mutation etc.

The Obama administration is considering an unprecedented fall vaccination campaign that could entail giving Americans three flu shots -- one to combat annual seasonal influenza and two targeted at the new swine flu virus spreading across the globe.

Perhaps this is the only way that this potential deadly virus can be stopped from becoming a world wide pandemic?

It seems that Big Pharma, Big Oil, Big Weapons and Private Military Contractors and Bik Banks have taken over control of our lives.

Is there any other newspaper or reputable news organization reporting on this? I don't have a lot of respect for the Washington Post, and I would put more trust in this information if it was consistently being reported by several different news sources.

Two of my kids just had the flu....took them to the doctors, they said "It's the flu, could be swine flu, just have them rest".

The point being, the doctors weren't that concerned with the fact that my kids might have swine flu. No need to vaccinate if it really isn't that big of an issue. Yes, the kids were very sick and down for a while (sure it would have been great to avoid) but I'm not going to get vaccinations just for fun.

I do believe many vaccination are essential (polio, measles, mumps, etc), but when you rush out a vaccine, just because its "flu season" I think its criminal.

Current WHO phase of pandemic alert
Current phase of alert in the WHO global influenza preparedness plan
Pandemic preparedness
In the 2009 revision of the phase descriptions, WHO has retained the use of a six-phased approach for easy incorporation of new recommendations and approaches into existing national preparedness and response plans. The grouping and description of pandemic phases have been revised to make them easier to understand, more precise, and based upon observable phenomena. Phases 1–3 correlate with preparedness, including capacity development and response planning activities, while Phases 4–6 clearly signal the need for response and mitigation efforts. Furthermore, periods after the first pandemic wave are elaborated to facilitate post pandemic recovery activities.

The current WHO phase of pandemic alert is 6.

Why are pandemics such dreaded events?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Category: Pandemic Influenza Questions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer
Influenza pandemics are remarkable events that can rapidly infect virtually all countries. Once international spread begins, pandemics are considered unstoppable, because the virus spreads very rapidly by coughing or sneezing. The fact that infected people can share the virus before symptoms appear adds to the risk of international spread via travelers.

The severity of disease and the number of deaths caused by a pandemic virus vary greatly, and cannot be known prior to the emergence of the virus. During past pandemics, attack rates reached 25-35% of the total population. Under the best circumstances, assuming that the new virus causes mild disease, the world could still experience an estimated 2 million to 7.4 million deaths (projected from data obtained during the 1957 pandemic). Projections for a more virulent virus are much higher. The 1918 pandemic, which was uniquely severe, killed at least 40 million people. In the US, the mortality rate of people infected with the virus during that pandemic was around 2.5%.

During a severe pandemic, such as the one that occurred in 1918, there would be large surges in the numbers of people requiring or seeking medical or hospital treatment, temporarily overwhelming health services. High rates of worker absenteeism could also interrupt other essential services, such as law enforcement, transportation, and communications. Because populations will be fully susceptible to a pandemic virus, rates of illness could peak fairly rapidly within a given community. This means that local social and economic disruptions may be temporary. They may, however, be amplified in today's closely interrelated and interdependent systems of trade and commerce.

As all countries are likely to experience emergency conditions during a pandemic, opportunities for inter-country assistance, as seen during natural disasters or localized disease outbreaks, may be curtailed once international spread has begun and governments focus on protecting domestic populations.

Nurse,

What the heck is this all about? Mandatory vaccinations world wide?
I saw this while reading from the governmet site you linked. Reminds me of Jonestown and the cool aid. I am NOT falling for this!

Table 3. Proposed sub-prioritization of vaccination among Tier 1 target groups for situations where vaccine supply is most limited.

Priority
Group
Rationale
Estimated Population

1
Front-line inpatient and hospital-based health care workers (persons essential for maintaining function in emergency departments, intensive care units, and other front-line medical and nursing staff)
Critical role in providing care for the sickest persons; highest risk of exposure and occupational infection
1,000,000

2
Deployed and mission-critical personnel
Essential role in national and homeland security; high risk due to living conditions and possibly geographic location
700,000

3
Front-line Emergency Medical Service personnel (those providing patient assessment, triage, and transport).
Provide critical medical care including procedures such as intubation that increase risk of aerosol exposure and occupational infection
800,000

4
Front-line outpatient health care providers (physicians, nurses, respiratory therapy; includes public health personnel who provide outpatient care for underserved groups)
Effective outpatient care is critical to decrease the burden on hospitals; high risk of exposure and occupational infection
1,000,000

5
Front-line fire and law enforcement personnel
Essential to public order and safety; less substantial and more predictable risk of exposure.
1,000,000

6
Pregnant women and infants 6-11 months old
High-risk documented in prior pandemics and annually; reflects public values to protect children; vaccination of a pregnant woman also will protect the infant; infants 6-11 months old are at high-risk and antiviral drugs are not FDA-approved for children <1 year old
5,150,000*

7
Others in Tier 1 (includes Tier 1 health care workers not vaccinated previously in hospitals, outpatient settings, home health, long-term care facilities, and public health; emergency service providers; manufacturers of pandemic vaccine, antiviral drugs, and other key pandemic response materials; and children 12-35 months old)
Includes persons in critical settings who have less exposure and toddlers who are less at risk of severe disease or death than younger infants and who are able to receive antiviral treatment based on FDA approval of antiviral drugs
13,100,000**

*Because infants would be expected to receive one-half a regular vaccine dose, the number of adult vaccine dose-equivalents for this group would be about 4,125,000

**Toddlers 12 – 35 months old may receive a lower vaccine dose; thus, the number of adult vaccine dose-equivalents for this group would be less.

Vaccination Tier 2 through 5 by Pandemic Severity

In contrast with Tier 1, target groups included in Tiers 2 through 5 will be different depending on pandemic severity (see Table 2). When vaccination has been completed for all five tiers, at any pandemic severity, everyone in the United States will have had the chance to be vaccinated.

Guidance for severe pandemics (PSI 4 or 5)

Tier 2 targets groups in the Homeland and National Security category that are critical to maintaining our country's safety. Critical community support service personnel are prioritized because they are needed to assist in a community pandemic response and support the elderly, persons living alone, and families complying with voluntary quarantine when a family member is ill (recommended as part of the community mitigation strategy). Critical infrastructures targeted in Tier 2 are those that provide "just in time services" (i.e., products like electricity and natural gas that cannot be stored), are relied on by all other infrastructures for their essential operations, and contribute to public health and safety. The highest risk children – those who have underlying medical conditions that increase their risk of complications or death from influenza infections – also are included in this tier.

Tier 3 includes the remainder of target groups that protect homeland and national security, provide health care, and maintain critical infrastructures. Critical Infrastructure sectors targeted in Tier 3 are those that provide essential products and services where there generally is greater "redundancy" in infrastructure (e.g., there are many bakeries, dairies, gas stations) or personnel (e.g., there are many truck drivers); or where burden is likely to decrease in a pandemic (e.g., less demand for mass transit, postal, and shipping). Many businesses in these sectors can take other measures to protect employees, such as using alternate work schedules, teleworking, and reducing in-person meetings and other contacts in the workplace. In the general population, children without high-risk medical conditions are targeted in this tier.

Tiers 4 and 5 are focused on groups in the general population that have not yet been vaccinated. Whereas persons aged 19 to 64 years who have underlying medical conditions and elderly persons 65 years old or older are targeted in Tier 4, in situations of limited vaccine supply, the 19 to 64 year old group should be targeted first. The rationale for targeting younger persons is that the effectiveness of seasonal and candidate pandemic influenza vaccines is less among elderly persons because of age-related decreases in immune function. Thus, when vaccine supply is limited, targeting high-risk adults before the elderly makes best use of the supply that is available. Other strategies, including hygiene and public health measures to reduce the risk of infection, and treatment with antiviral medications are effective options to protect the elderly. Healthy adults would be targeted in Tier 5.

I wonder how much per dose this drug company will make? I see that the plan is to give the vaccine to 75-80% of the US population, not to mention all the other countries that are planning this.

Hope this crap is safe as we will all be the long term test subjects.

I smell a rat.

Years ago I used to get regular flu shots. Always got sick afterwards and was told by the doctor "drink plenty of fluids, get plenty of rest, etc". One year I decided to NOT get the flu shot and...didn't get sick! Haven't had a flu shot since and definitely won't get involved with this panic global vaccination hype that is going on. I worry that it takes years and billions of dollars to allow a new drug into the marketplace in the US, but the same government seems to be okay with testing this new vaccine on a few hundred school kids and older people to determine its "safety". That just bothers me.

Also, the H1N1 virus is doing exactly what viruses do, it is mutating. The most recent report is that a new version, called "novel H1N1" has surfaced. Is this new vaccine going to guard populations against "novel H1N1" and any other variants that pop up in the next few months? This is lunacy! Wash your hands, cover your mouth, stay away from crowded venues if you are symptomatic, use common sense.

You can read about the 1976 swine flu vaccine at the CDE website:
Web Link

Guillian-Barre syndrome was a side effect, and back then, there was also a vaccination effort.

And on CNN, this article talks about what happened in 1976:
"Twenty-five people died from the inoculation while one person was killed by the flu, Paul said, adding that he voted against inoculation"

The article:

(the article is from may of this year, but click on the "watch Ron Paul talk about the 1976 swine flu"

From everything I have read, the 1976 vaccination caused problems (neurological) , and they had to stop the vaccination because of the problems.

I am skeptical about a vaccine that has either not been tested enough or has been rushed through testing.

I vaguely recall a book by Stephen King called The Stand, wherein a "government created" flu somehow manages to escape it's research facility, become airborne, infect 90+% of the population & eventually kill almost everybody in the world.

Ha, ha, ha, silly me what was I thinking! Our government is waaaay to responsible, organized & effective to ever let something out of science fiction like that scenario to ever happen. Right?

..."It's the end of the world & we know it & I feel fine."
