Health care debate turns vile with Nazi analogy
Right-wing loudmouths distort history, diminish true evil of the Holocaust

Rush Limbaugh and those who invoking the Nazi analogy to attack President Barack Obama's effort to reform health care in America are not "insane" as David Brooks pronounced on last Sunday's "Meet the Press." Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and the rest of the loud-mouthed right wing are, when they even hint at an analogy to the Nazis in talking about Obama's health reform effort, engaged in something far worse than insanity. They are engaged in the vile evil of Holocaust denial.

For some time now, Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has held the title of the world's most dangerous anti-Semite due to his denial that the Holocaust occurred. Limbaugh and his ilk who have been throwing around references to Adolf Hitler, National socialism and Nazi medicine without hesitation have surpassed the danger posed by the Iranian president. They are offering a false view of why the Holocaust happened. Their flagrant, deliberate and invidious distortion of what happened to medicine in Nazi Germany must not be allowed to stand. Not just because health reform is too important an issue but also because the truth is too important to let ignoramuses destroy it.

Contrary to what Limbaugh and other Holocaust deniers would have you believe, German medicine and science were not brought into the Nazi party once Hitler took power. They fueled the fire for what became Nazism with bigotry proffered as science.

Limbaugh, Beck, Palin and other Holocaust deniers ignore the core racist evil of Nazism. They reach for preposterous analogies between counseling people about living wills and the forced, involuntary mass murder carried out in the name of racism in concentration camps.

When the right wing, in their distaste for the President's push to reform a heath care system that even the American Medical Association and the pharmaceutical industry recognize has to be fixed, suggest that the disabled will be targeted or that the elderly will be killed or find themselves without health care due to rationing by government bureaucrats as happened in Nazi Germany, they marginalize the gross evil that was the racial bigotry that fueled Nazi programs to euthanize, sterilize, experiment upon and torture people in places that were in no way connected to hospitals, clinics or nursing homes.

There is plenty to debate about health reform. But there is nothing to debate about the contemptible introduction of references, direct or oblique, to Nazi Germany. To do so is to engage in Holocaust denial. To do that is, as those Americans of the greatest generation who died or were injured fighting the Nazi menace well understood, inexcusable.

Well done.

Limbaugh, Beck, Palin, Hannity, Dobbs = Anti-Semitic

On the one hand, they have a right to engage in Free Speech. They do not have a right to incite mentally ill people to murder President Obama and the First Family. The extremists are encouraging citizens to murder fellow citizens.

If the President is murdered, there will riots in this country and many innocent citizens will lose their lives.

Despite the fact that Limbaugh has not apologized for his comments and is continuing to compare the Obama White House and the Democratic Party with Nazis, many in the media don't consider it newsworthy and haven't condemned it. And more important, journalists don't show any signs of believing that the episode tells us anything about the radically unhinged nature of the right-wing media in this country today. That story's just a non-starter. Period.
It's just Rush being Rush, right?
If I could play assignment editor for a moment here: The political story of the year continues to be the unhinged radical-right response to Obama's inauguration and the naked attempt to dehumanize and delegitimize him through a nonstop smear campaign sponsored by the GOP Noise Machine. The misguided movement breaks all kinds of taboos in American politics, as well as in the press, and is redefining our political culture -- for the worse. Yet the press continues to play dumb.
So spooked are journalists by decades' worth of "liberal media bias" attacks that they refuse to connect the glaringly obvious dots on display. They refuse to drill down into the rancid undercurrent that's behind the Obama-is-a-Nazi dementia, the town hall mini-mobs that are wreaking havoc across the country, and the bizarre birther conspiracy theory. The three right-wing phenomena are all related, and they all revolve around a runaway hatred of Obama (as well as the federal government), and they're all being fueled by the Noise Machine, especially Fox News and Limbaugh, both of which no longer recognize common decency, let alone journalistic standards.
Yet instead of putting Limbaugh on the receiving end of well-deserved scrutiny and scorn for his outlandish Nazi rhetoric, rather than turning his comments into a political firestorm, the press plays dumb and actually goes out of its way to legitimize the worst offenders of the GOP's hate brigade.

A terrific article, including analogies to Germany, written by a former Navy SEAL...

June,

For you edification, it was Nutcase Pelosi and Hussain Osama, er, Obama that involked the Nazi term. Then Osama started talking about "foot soldiers" to make sure government policy is followed. The SS won't be far behind. June, I am wondering if you will be one of the first to join the foot-soldiers? I am also wondering what arm band they will come up with to replace the swastika.

Left-wing lunaticism has really taken a very, very nasty turn. Its not amusing anymore.

You people must be kidding. Did you see Obama's "town hall" today and I use that term loosely? The only people who got in had to receive invitations from their local representatives (Democrats). He answered the questions however he chose to answer them and then his disciplines shouted in unison "yes we can! yes we can!". So do not tell me this guy is up front.

Name calling never achieves a meaningful dialogue. It may help you vent but it doesn't promote your viewpoint. To the contrary, it demonstrates your inability to articulate you viewpoint.

I don't listen to Limbau and didn't read your details. All I know is there wouldn't and shouldn't be an uproar....IF this process was
TRANSPARENT like promised during the campaign. Again today, Obama used generalities like reducing cost... no, I want numbers. Also, today after his trip to Mexico pretty much said he'd be doing amnesty in 2010...that would be for those 15-20 million new voters. They will also be newly insured. Of course it doesn't much matter. Today's Times article of Mom of NINE in contra costa and how TOUGH it is for her. AWHHHH thank her pope & priest for teaching her irresponsible breeding.

What wonderful news that OUR very own President Obama plans to grant A M N E S T Y! to "illegals". VIVA AMERICA!

Jennie, you needn't worry about the woman in Contra Costa because she's going to receive all the help that she needs so that her lovely children thrive! VIVA AMERICA!

The good news is that the majority of the new citizens will be loyal to the USA and they will work hard and pay their taxes! The opportunities are countless: a quality American education, numerous ways to serve their adopted country and gradually, their will enrich our social/cultural fabric! FYI: some of the "illegals" from Latin American are also Jewish so I will be working to refer them to the various generous Jewish Social Service agencies in the Bay Area! I can't tell you how HAPPY this makes me. VIVA AMERICA!

I PROMISE TO GIVE THIS THREAD MORE THOUGHT AND GET BACK TO YOU SOON!

VIVA AMERICA! VIVA AMERICA! VIVA AMERICA!

SIGNED...CHOLO ALERT!

Really interesting seeing his disciplines saying in unison "yes we can! yes we can!" sounds a bit familiar to "sieg heil! sieg heil!"

Hi DSM-IV, up to your imposter tricks again? BUSTED!

What exactly do you mean by "seeing his disciplines"? What in the world is a "disciplines"? Speak English! POR FAVOR!

Incidentally, your use of "sieg heil! sieg heil! doesn't bother one bit. Jews are resilient people. Take an extra blue pill tonight and you'll wake up feeling worse!
