You call this Socialism?

Original post made by Roger, Country Fair, on Jul 15, 2009

After nearly 15 years at the same job, I was laid off at the beginning of the year.

Because of my own good money habits, and Obama's stimulus package, my family still has a roof over their heads. We have medical coverage and a cushion as well. If Bush were still in office, we would not have medical and would probably be homeless by now.

So, Obama decided to help out those that facing a long unemployment period (thanks to Bush & Co.) and to help ease the cost of medical. Is that such a terrible "socialist" move?

Conservatives by nature back BIG military and using the military!
Trillions have been spent overseas causing mass destruction and death. We rebuild what we destroy as well. Conservatives have no problem with that.

However, if we help out people who spent a lifetime paying taxes here in the U.S., the conservatives just loose it.

What kind of sense does this make if any?

Sorry to hear about your situation- I can sympathize. I was Laid-off the job I was at for 15yrs last year, during "downsizing" and "restructuring". In my situation it meant getting rid of the people in the field doing the work and interacting with the customers and adding two more layers of managerial oversight for the few employees left. The last memo I received had more signatures at the bottom then were on the distribution list

Roger, sorry to hear about your situation but since you are praising Obama for helping you keep health care coverage and keep your home, what exactly has he done that has allowed that? There have been no changes to health care since he took office. And the stimulus plans (neither Bush's nor Obama's) have not created any jobs or done anything to keep people in their homes, at least not that I am aware of.

Good Luck, REALLY? I am imagining that Obama's stimulus package has helped my family directly? It doesn't really exist? Hmm?

"There have been no changes to health care since he took office. And the stimulus plans (neither Bush's nor Obama's) have not created any jobs or done anything to keep people in their homes, at least not that I am aware of."

The American Recovery Act has provided MY family the following:

A second and third round of unemployment INSURANCE payments! Non existent under Bush!

My former employer and any employer with more than 20 employee's now pays 65% of the laid off employee's Cobra costs, for up to nine months!

This is a HUGE help when we are really in need. I am diligently seeking employment on a daily basis and have come up empty handed.

BTW- we have paid more than our fair share of taxes over the years as well.

Roger, I wish you the best of luck. Being laid off must rank only below death and divorce in the stress department! We suffered through one a few years back, but we survived. I remember at the time about fainting when I saw that COBRA would cost us almost $900/month. Talk about being kicked when you are down! That is **great** that you pay just 35% of it (though I know it is still very stressful).

Thanks Julie.. Yes it's tough and yes we will survive. It's an incredible help that I was not expecting. I was not expecting an unemployment extension or the 9 months of paying 35% for health care coverage. I am very, very grateful.

If I had been a major conservative, would I have had to refuse the "hand out"?? I mean, this is socialism right? LOL

Stay Cool; thanks for the links but this is July and these date back to January and February. The housing plan, as referenced in this article, is a "plan". Worthless talk from politicians. I'd like to see evidence of meaningful and quantifiable improvements resulting from all the talk....you know what they say about talk.

OK, COBRA benefits are now being subsidized by all of us taxpayers for up to 9 months. COBRA is ridiculously expensive and that's when I needed to use it I immediately found private insurance for about 40% of the cost. And at no additional cost to taxpayers. Yes, I understand there are serious problems with health care costs and the inability of getting affordable insurance when you have a pre-existing condition.

Roger; do a little more research. Unemployment benefits were extended in 2002 and 2008. Sorry to hear that you have paid more than your fair share of taxes over the years...I think we all have and that it is time we have more of that money for ourselves. It sounds like you have been financially responsible in your life and can probably manage your money better than some bureaucrat or politician.

Good luck in your job search.

You should be ashamed of yourself relying on the Govt. Since when has the Govt ever done to help anyone but themselves. I guess this is what America and Americans have become begging the Govt for money. It's funy how you praise Obama and blame Bush in the same sentence. Nice example you are setting for your kids future beggers.

Good Luck,
Sorry for posting the wrong link, here is the correct one (providing the evidence you're seeking, I hope):

Though I must say, when this plan was implemented it widely discussed in the news - I'm very surprised that you did not hear about it. It wasn't "worthless talk from politicians," but an actual plan executed by the current administration, and currently up for possible expansion. You might want to do a little more research yourself.

I saw/heard several Dems talking about the HEalth Care Plan. They made it clear taxpayers will be paying for any new plan for at least FIVE years BEFORE a the PLAN kicks in !!! ZERO payOUTS for
at least 5 years.

Roger,

Good luck finding a job... seriously. I was laid off during the dot-bomb fiasco, and found a job after about six months. Oddly, my family WAS NEVER IN DANGER of losing the house, because I had planned for the possibility, and didn't buy a house that required us to live paycheck-to-paycheck. Therefore, I didn't require a personal bailout at the hands of the taxpayers. I took my rightfully earned (and self-financed) unemployment checks, and scrimped every penny so that my family was always taken care of.

The added COBRA requirements on businesses have had the exact OPPOSITE impact than what you need. Companies have frozen their hiring, because it's become too costly to attrit substandard employees with the longer, more expensive COBRA requirements, so good people looking for jobs can't get hired anywhere. So while you're home, looking for a job and thanking Obama for the COBRA financial help, you should be damning Obama because the COBRA rules have caused companies to drastically curtail hiring.

p.s. I agree that too much money is wasted overseas fighting in unwinnable battles. Of course, EVERY SINGLE PRESIDENT has done it, which makes it all the more galling.
