I wanted to come up with a non-fastfood chain(national) cheap places to eat list. I thought people could add what they know and maybe learn a few from other posters.
This might be tough, it's Pleasanton, and no national chain fastfood places. If it's in Dublin or Livermore it can go on the list. I don't have much so far.

I don't think Fiesta Taco is a chain, at least not a national one. It is located in that "mall" at the corner of Santa Rita and Valley - across from Safeway. I can't suggest a specific menu item, I just know that the food is reasonably good and quite inexpensive. It's got sort of a "pizza parlor" ambiance with wood tables and pinball games and it's popular with the teens, but I like it. Here's some info on it:

I'm not sure what your criteria is for "cheap". This place is also good. If you just drink water, you may get out for under $10 for lunch:

I'm not really sure what you are interested in, but someone has already created a list of all the restaurants in the area... check it out here (although it isn't updated very often so call before you go if you're not sure they are still open.)

Also forgot to mention that you can choose which city at the top of the website and it will refine it for you. I provided the P-town link. Be sure to look through the website in general...it has lots of good local things.

We like falafel house on Bernal/Valley Ave by the county fairgrounds. Delicious rice and Kabobs,falafels. Prices are good and portions are fairly large. I think the dinner plates are $8.99.

I like this thread. But regarding Simply Greek, which I haven't tried, $5.95 doesn't sound cheap. How big are these gyros? I used to get tasty huge fresh quesadillas al pastor at a "roach coach" in SF for $2.50.

Yes, Chicago's Deli is appropriate for kids of all ages. I'm boring, I just ordered some sort of turkey sandwich, but it was from their menu and it was really good. My husband used to work in town and raved about the place.
Wow, I didn't know you could pay less than $5 for lunch anywhere! In general I am really cheap and do make my own lunch :)

It's definitely not easy to find a place these days with lunch under $5!

In-n-Out might actually be considered cheap, depending upon how much you're normally prone to eat for lunch. (Remember, your meat portion should be no larger than the side of your palm.) :)

Meiko Sushi by Jack In The Box is pretty cheap for lunch. They have a lunch special for about 6 bucks and you get a lot of food (depending on how big of an appetite one has). The Chinese place over by Vic's is also cheap- depending on what you order the lunch meals can be anywhere from 4 to maybe 7 dollars. In this day and age, I think anything under 10 bucks for lunch is a deal, especially if the portion is large enough to take home the leftovers.

Without question, the best 'cheap' lunch in town is the triple decker club sandwich with fries at Jim's Restaurant. If you can eat it in one sitting, you're just a pig. Face it!
You'll need a friend to help you carry it out the door.. it's heavy, and contains a very large portion of arguably the best french fries in town!
Under $10, and I get a lunch and reheat for dinner out of it. Such a deal!!!
Jim's is on the corner of Mission/Sunol in the Raley's shopping center/across from the Pleasanton Senior Center.

Yes, Jim's is a great place to eat, I especially like breakfast there. The Chinese place by Vic's is Chef Hunan Wong (the 1st one). We love to eat there or order take out from them. It's a family run business, very nice people.

Not sure if this was intended to elicit recipes, but, I must tell you that I strive to make meals for under $10 for a family of four big eaters.
Here's my favorite...
Hit Raley's (or Costco if you have time) and get a rotisserie chicken and some fresh brocolli. On your way home hit any Chinese food restaurant and get steamed rice to go.
You get home, rinse and microwave the brocolli to steam it. Cut up the chicken and add scoops of rice and steamed broc. So quick, so healthy, and so easy...
I realize you can make it cheaper if you steam the rice at home, but it saves time which is sometimes worth that $1!!
Really a healthy, quick meal for parents that are busy! :)

Along the same lines, what about places that are not cheap, but should be. Like the new yogurt shop downtown. I truly want our new downtown businesses to succeed, but come on......do not give me a cup the size of a watermelon and then charge me by the weight for my yogurt. The weight of the cup alone adds about $1 to the price of a yogurt. Yet it's $3.95 for gelato in a cup the size of a pea.

I'd say under $10 for a sit down, filling meal including non alcholic drink is the line. Maybe a dollar less for breakfast and a dollar more for dinner. It's all relative, and should be compared to where else you'd have to go to get the same quality and quantity of food. Other places that have a relatively cheap food, like pizza, compared to other pizza places can be listed. It has to be good though! Looking here for ways to save money and eat good food out on the town.
