Why are the fines and court fees so low? I would have expected something much higher based on the seriousness of the offense. If running a red light is what $250+ then the texting-while-driving should be at least that. $20 per offense is a joke!!

I also question the fine level. Especially given if one is texting and the cause of an accident. The litigation costs will be enormous! Better to resolve it before someone makes an attorney rich over texting stupidity.

I have seen so many drivers continue to talk on their cell phone and text while driving that it has made me laugh that they bothered with the law at all. The fact that the fine is so ridiculously low explains why their behavior has continued. I drove down Bernal last night and encountered 4 cars in a row - all on their cell phones - without "hands free". One in particular caught my attention because it was a very expensive maserati and the driver was using his Iphone while moving at the speed limit. Denting that car is a lot more to worry about than the $20.00 fine for getting caught!

Fines are so low they are a joke. I'd be curious to know what the average cost to the Police Department is to pull over someone for a traffic violation (Salary, Vehicle cost, etc) and make the fine at least that.
I recently saw a middle-schooler text-messaging while riding his bicycle, is there a fine for that?
If a situation is serious enough to pass a law to prevent it, it's certainly worthwhile making the punishment fit the potential hazard not just have a cosmetic fine.

The fines are not as low as you think. From what I've reade..the State charges 25 bucks but local fees can push that 25 to as much as 90. Text all you want, talk on the phone, somehow you'll be helping pay off the budget deficit.
