How will the traffic be handled? Will there be another entrance from Bernal directly into the gas station?
I cannot fathom how the traffic is going to work the way it is now, especially at the area by WFB, blocking the main entrance, backing up cars unto Bernal.
Traffic at the Bernal/I-680 interchange and on Bernal between Valley and I-680 is becoming awful and is going to quickly get much, much worse. When Safeway Gas and the Starbucks drive-thru opens, they are going to attract a lot of traffic passing by on I-680 to go there for a fill-up and/or a Starbucks. Imagine the current craziness on Dublin Boulevard near the Safeway gas and the craziness at the Starbucks off I-580 in Livermore combined. Then, into the mix, add the traffic for Fair events and it is going to be gridlock.
Pleasanton got pressured into opening Stoneridge Drive to Livermore, and this craziness at Bernal and I-680 is going to eventually force an interchange to be put in at I-680 and Las Positas.
When Safeway Gas, Starbucks and CVS all get opened, the lack of parking at Gateway Center is going to make it Gateway to Hell.
Stoneridge to Livermore has nothing to do with this discussion, and NONE of those businesses...in fact, NO business period...irrelevant to Bernal or 680 discussions.
Thank goodness someone had the brains to turn off the Bernal to i680SB metering light. If you have the metering light plus the expected traffic from the new Safeway gas station, Bernal would get backed up to City Hall during the morning commute hours.
Where is all this smart technology that Pleasanton invested in for synchronzing traffic lights to traffic flow? Nowhere in Pleasanton can you travel a major road and not have to contend with traffic lights that for no reason turn red, even when there is no cross traffic.
Back in the 50's Caltrans proved that you could synchronize traffic on major roads in the city of Sacramento. And they were just using ladder logic to turn relays on and off. No fancy computers or cameras.
@Bill...what is the exponental factor of the number cars on the roads now compared the 1950's? I agree with you that with todays advanced technology we should be doing a better job, bottom line, there is still only so many cars the roads can hold. We sre going to be like bangkok.
The Gateway shopping center is a joke and a perfect example of mismanaged development by Ptown's planning commission. The parking lot is too small and too narrow to support the size of the complex and with the addition of the massive Safeway gas station, traffic flow is going to become a nightmare. Just another example of the incompetency of the planning for the future of the city. I used to live right down the street in the Windsor development and as soon as hey stated construction on that complex, I moved as quickly as I could realizing what a nightmare Bernal would become. Glad I had the foresight that city govt did not.
At $4 per gallon, I resent what appears to be a problem with the traffic engineering in this town.
I realize that times change and the numbers of cars have increased, but there appears to be an absence of reason for this continual stopping of the flow of traffic. When traffic is light and I have to stop five or more times traveling from Del Valle Parkway to 580, something is wrong.
As for the Bernal Safeway fuel facility -- I see current mismanagement of the traffic flow at both the Safeway Dublin and Livermore facilities. I'm all for a local Safeway fuel facility, but the current layout is going to be a traffic nightmare.
Oh boy, this is going to be a real nightmare. I live near this center and I kept waiting and hoping to see some sign of a new entrance for the gas station/Starbucks. I cannot imagine how cars will flow anywhere near efficiently through those venues. Dublin has to have 2-3 "traffic monitors" to direct that mess over there at the pumps! And I agree with above posters about the parking lot already being too small and narrow. If you drive anything much bigger than a mini it's a tight squeeze. The entire center shows very poor planning and layout. Unfortunate because there are a few places in there worth patronizing.

My favorite traffic signal (NOT) in Pleasanton is the left turn light from northbound Santa Rita to westbound Stoneridge. In the middle of the night you can wait up to 2 minutes for this left turn signal light to turn green. This is with no traffic whatsoever on Santa Rita or Stoneridge.
FYI - traffic in the 1950s was just as screwed up as it is today, even worst. Think of a traffic light on Mathilda Ave and HWY 101 with 30,000 employees trying to get to work at Lockheed.
Wow..all these complaints...how many of you guys bother to attend the monthly traffic planning meetings which are open to the public?.....none. How may of you complainers bother to send an email , with your return information, to the traffic engineering department?....none. So shut your pie holes.
Sent a bunch of emails. Participated in surveys.
You know what, politicians and their lackey planners are going to do what they please, common sense be damned.

If you don't see any connection between the conjestion that the Stoneridge extension and the Bernal debacle, then you need to start thinking. Perhaps you were reading this when you had too many beers, or you were asleep. Whatever the reason, you evidently don't understand squat about traffic. Both of those fiascos, will untimately lead to an interchange going in at I-680 and Las Positas.
get gas a 2am-shouldn't be a problem and quit complaining. Yes I know the traffic will suck BUT for us that live in this area we are very happy to get a gas station that is NOT Chevron.
I know Safeway is supposed to be a good corporate neighbor for Pleasanton. But what they've been able to get away with in the Bernal development is a tragedy! First, they promised a really upscale Safeway that could compete with a Whole Foods. That was a complete outright lie. The Safeway is a Safeway is a Safeway. It is no different than any other Safeway. Then it was stated that there would be no gas station. I now see a HUGE gas station. Really. Pleasanton needs two large gas stations in the same block! The congestion at this development ought to be against the law. The spaces are too tight and the complex is completely overbuilt. The Pleasanton Planning Commission and City Council that approved this mess should be ashamed of their performance. And Safeway ought to get a lesson on how to actually be a good neighbor instead of just marketing campaigns that project them as one. The parking is a nightmare. I feel bad for the businesses that have moved there in good faith. They will not get the customer numbers they thought they would as there is just not enough parking to go around. If I were Wells Fargo Bank - I would be jumping ship about now. A line of cars to get gas and a Starbucks will certainly discourage banking customers. It's really too bad because it COULD have been a beautiful gateway to Pleasanton......instead of a strip mall nightmare. Shame on all of you.
It is about time Pleasanton had a safeway gas station.The gas prices in this city are outrageous.I can deal with a little traffic,as long as we can get gas .30cents a gallon cheaper!!
Its nice and quiet by Raleys, and nice employees too. Easy parking. No headaches.
Even prior to the opening of CVS, the gas station and Starbucks, parking at the Gateway complex often seemed inadequate. I think it is going to get very ugly unless they add more parking.
There was a time City leaders were concerned about cut through traffic going through residential areas. Now they seem intent on creating a major bottleneck at a major entry / exit point.
To All Who Are Complaining please do not visit that shopping center and do not fill gas at the Safeway gas station and you will help in reducing traffic. I think we need more competition as Pleasanton as too few gas stations. That Cheveron is just a rip off.I for one will be happy to fill up.

I've shopped the Bernal Safeway since it opened at all hours, including peak times at the holiday. I've never not been able to park within 10 spaces of the store entry. Like many lots, the lanes are narrow and not designed for giant vehicles which is why I don't drive a guzzler any more. Gateway has 3 entrances that work fine; I've always exited on a single traffic signal and never been stuck in long lines. The contstruction vehicles everywhere the last few months were not great but hopefully will be gone soon. Filled up at the new station on Sunday and didn't have to wait in line like I ALWAYS did in Dublin. LOVED paying under $4 for premium with my discount. Love shopping at a clean market that offers variety and choice yet doesn't gobble up my whole paycheck. Also like having some upscale quick meal options close to home at the new bakery, Habit, etc. So welcome Safeway and neighbors--we are happy to have you close by.
To gateway to hell, also known as illogical and emotional. There are not and never will be, grocery nor gas stations at Stonerige & Hopyard, and is a looong distance to a freeway ramp, very UNlike Bernal. Also, Stoneridge doesn't have 4 sets of intersection light signals within 1/8 of a mile, as Bernal does.
Also,smart ass, I do not drink, was not sleepy when I wrote my 11AM comment, I am informed, do understand traffic, monitor and have zero tolerance of sloppy or incompetent drivers....and texters backing up intersections.
I agree with Gateway to Hell. You just don't get it. Either that, or you're a big shot with the Chamber of Commerce (same thing).
There's a simple explanation for all of this:
Campaign Contributions = giving Safeway what they want.
Traffic and residents be damned!
Stoneridge and Santa Rita has city waterworks on 2 of the 4 corners, not likely to change.. A small office on 3rd corner; A permanent water canal & a block sound wall on 4th. None of those will change to ANYTHING ELSE....and NO fairgrounds OR freeway in sight, like at Bernal/Valley & 680. So Gateway & Agree, you are throwing out phony scare tactics that is totally misplaced....simply no comparisons or connection can be made. I actually agree, to a degree, regarding Bernal/680 & Safeway gas locations. But, that does not give license for you, to be polite, 'mislead & distort', when there are zero similarities with Stoneridge Dr....give it up, will not fly.
An earlier poster (Bill) claims Caltrans has turned off the metering lights on the SB I-680 on-ramp from Bernal.
Is this true? If so, I'll soon be taking advantage of that instead of sitting on Sunol Blvd. for 10-15 minutes every day waiting for the metering light.
Sounds too good to be true to me.
