Pleasanton’s school board is readying for a busy meeting Tuesday night.
The board is expected to appoint principals for Harvest Park and Hart middle schools and will decide whether it can adjust its staffing finances based on the state’s May revised budget.
The state’s May revised budget is critical for Pleasanton Unified since the district is considering laying off some employees unless it can find more funding for those positions. Most of those positions had been paid for with one-time dollars that were not renewed.
According to the school board meeting agenda, the May revise includes additional one-time funding of $23 per student in attendance. This means the district will get about $329,000 more in one-time funding for the 2016-17 year.
The board will discuss how much of an impact this funding will have on previous layoff decisions. The district sent out pink slips to some certificated and classified staff earlier this spring. District administration stated at previous meetings that they hoped to be able to rescind some of those layoff notices after the May revise.
The school board will also honor the district’s high school valedictorians and salutatorians at Tuesday night’s board meeting, held at the district headquarters on Bernal Avenue.

The district is not “CONSIDERING” laying off employees, it has already handed out layoff notices.
The $23 per student is being used to bring back very few positions.
Our students deserve better.
The district has already sent out the layoff notices to very valuable and necessary employees. These positions (site techs, librarians, custodial staff) are on the chopping block EVERY YEAR!!! Why are these positions not in the General Fund? Why have they consistently been funding with “one time money” each and every year since they were removed from the general fund in 2008? The hole that was created when these positions were removed has been filled in with newly created positions. This is disgraceful. These employees deserve better.
With a district that is striving to be the best in the land, cutting technology services – when the use of technology in the classroom is at its highest in years, and cutting library services is disgraceful and downright disgusting.
Why does the district continually dangle these positions out there like bait hoping that some money will appear and they will be able to fund these valuable and necessary positions? And why is it that the elementary schools take the brunt of the hit, EVERY SINGLE TIME? This is where the success of the students begin…taking away these valuable resources hurts everyone.
