A 32-year-old Amador Valley High grad who was shot and killed on Pier 14 next to the San Francisco Ferry Building in broad daylight on Wednesday has been identified by the medical examiner’s office.

San Francisco resident Kathryn Steinle was found suffering from a at least one gunshot wound to her upper torso at about 6:30 p.m. near the Embarcadero and Mission Street in the city’s South Beach neighborhood, police said.

Steinle was transported to San Francisco General Hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Officers flooded the area and detained a person matching the description of a “possible person of interest” on the corner of Embarcadero and Townsend Street.

Police have not publicly released that person’s identity and are continuing to investigate a possible motive.

  1. Family members say the woman had moved from Pleasanton to San Francisco and was walking with her father, when she suddenly collapsed and said, “oh Dad.”

Police say they have no evidence that the victim knew the man taken in for questioning.

  2. again…a gun free zone…right
When are the S.F. Leaders going to realize that when you outlaw guns…
only the outlaws will have guns.

The bad guys don’t follow the laws. Only the honest people do.

  3. Yo, Mike, do you really think anything would have been different if this women or any (or all) of her family had been armed?! Sounds like this women was virtually ambushed. How would her having a gun in her pocket have changed anything?! If this had been some sort of a shootout between multiple armed individuals, there would likely have been many more people killed or injured. Unless we want everyone walking around town with guns drawn, locked and loaded, ready to initiate gun battles back and forth at a moments notice with criminals on our streets and in our buildings, etc this type of scenario could not have been prevented.

  4. First regarding Open Carry – not a good idea. Regarding Lic Concealed Handguns, begs the question “Does he (she) or doesn’t he (she) – excellent deterrent. I live in a state that permits both. Seems to work out fine. Would the crime have been prevented if the victim or someone in the vicinity of the victim been permitted to carry a concealed weapon – is a question that can only be answered “don’t know” but in my state the perpetrator would likely know that pulling a gun here to commit a violent act against another person would likely resulted in an immediate and potentially deadly response from “someone” and that thought alone may have been sufficient to prevent this from happening in public.

  5. SF is a sanctuary city. The suspect was in the U.S. Illegally, had been deported previously and was on probation for aggravated assault.

  6. No description of the murderer? That makes me think the perp doesn’t look like Timothy Mcveigh, otherwise every media outlet who have posted police artist sketchings.

  7. @JRF: “…but in my state the perpetrator would likely know that pulling a gun here to commit a violent act against another person would likely resulted in an immediate and potentially deadly response from “someone” and that thought alone may have been sufficient to prevent this from happening in public.”

You didn’t mention which state you live in. What utopian state do you live in where all the armed criminals cower in fear at the thought of citizens all around them pulling out their handguns? What utopian state is this where crime rates are low because handgun possession is so widespread?

  8. Very sad. Prayers to the family for this senseless murder. I hope the perpetrator does hard time or gets equal Karma for his actions in the end.

  9. Dear PW staff,

It was reported in other news outlet that the victim grew up here and went to highschool at AVHS. I say that’s slightly more than “with ties to”, don’t you think? Perhaps the title of the article can be updated since the poor woman probably had many friends in the area?

  10. I went to high school with Katie. She was always warm and kind, and I cannot remember a single negative thought about her. May she rest in peace after this senseless and tragic crime.
