Most Pleasanton parents/students FAVOR new calendar options

Original post made by Laverne on May 30, 2014

Regarding the proposed calendar, feedback to the district has been mostly positive and very few people showed up to voice any concerns at the recent school board meeting where the calendar was discussed. Studies have shown various benefits from a modified schedule. The schedule will not dramatically improve education, but studies have shown students have a better attitude and those have resulted in a decrease in absenteeism and decrease in discipline issues. The high schools may see more benefit than the elementary but there is really no negative side to any level.

Very few people showed up at the meeting, because very few parents know this change is coming. There has been very little notification, except a few emails. Even the email yesterday from the district, not once said "modified" is very sneaky & hush hush the way they have been approaching it.
Parents, is this really good for your children? Or is this just more convenient for you? Are you one of those parents that really values your time with your kids, or do you avoid them & plug them into their electronic babysitters?
I am ok with the change, as long as there is ample notitfication & if most parents know about it, but I dont count 3 emails with wishy washy words as ample notification.

Good god, I don't care at all. Find something important to care about. You have too much time on your hands.

The reason why very few people showed up at the meeting is because they don't care that much and it's not really a big deal. Schedules change, we have random teacher work days off, sometimes the year starts at different times, depending on the calendar, we have had staggered reading sprung on us. One week, the modified lite, which is what they are truly considering, is not that much of a change. People adapt, childcare providers adapt, it's just one week. People generally favor it, or don't care much one way or another. It seems like there is generally one person ranting on this board. Go outside and get some fresh air, it will be good for you. This is small stuff.

Which calender are they considering? I like the calender where finals are before winter break. This is closer to what college schedule is like, everyone is always saying we need to prepare the kids for college. At the same time the kids and family can enjoy winter break. Then go back to school with a fresh start.

Looks like it's between our Traditional Calender or Modified Lite. I think the modified Lite would be a good choice. It would be nice to have a survey from the parents and students. They did that for the homework years ago. Changes are good, I know many don't like changes but it's all about the our children!

"Are you one of those parents that really values your time with your kids, or do you avoid them & plug them into their electronic babysitters?"

The number of days/minutes that your child is in school will NOT change no matter what calendar is adopted. To suggest that a parent is a bad parent if they think the calendar is changed is not only ridiculous, it shows a high level of ignorance.

For those who say that the communication is bad, perhaps you should try attending a school board meeting or watching it on TV or reading the minutes or reading an article about what is happening. Not getting involved is your own fault. Just because someone on the school board didn't call you personally to find out what you thought doesn't mean they are not communicating. In addition, we elected these people so they didn't have to waste time trying to talking to every individual. The school board has had this discussion at many different meetings, so essentially if you have been paying attention at all for the last year you had an opportunity to provide your opinion on the matter. Certainly if they brought this up 1 meeting and voted the next I would agree with you , but that was clearly not the case for the calendar change.

I saw a sign up near Walnut Grove school sating something like "WG parents, Don't let them change our school calendar, fill out the surgery and stop the change" Do they just assume that parents with elementary children are against the change? I personally have 2 children in grade school and would welcome a shorter summer and a week off in Oct. My kids lose so much during the 10 weeks that they are off during the summer as most kids probably do, so it would be nice to shorten it and give them time off during the year. I also like the early start and early finish. Not sure what all the complaints are about, you still get several weeks off in the Summer to be with your kids. I am sure that the parents that are complaining about not wanting the change will be the same parents complaining that their high schoolers have testing after the winter break not before.
